most older are better with -. But if the older player was Highend for the time period like a Sony or Pany 5 disc then it won't really like either very well.

If the player was made in the 1990's and cost more than $100 dollars when you bought it then it probably will not play any DVDR very well. It will probably even have a hard time with pressed DVD's from lowrent studios and publishers.

I find that usually for playing DVDR of anytype basically the cheaper the the better for players. But these player are nearly disposable and only last a few years.

I have a Yamaha player that was purchased in May 2002. It plays DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-R but does not play DVD+R.
Look at the booklet that came with your recorder under spec's and that should state which type of media your player plays. Perhaps there is a F/W update that will make it more compatable to the various types of media, call the service dept. of the manufacturer.

Actually, a lot of manuals don't specify what players can play. At least, they don't specify formats that the manufacturer doesn't acknowledge the existence of (DVD-R not really being available to consumers in 2002).

The best way to find out, unfortunately, is to keep a small library of discs that are burned so they will reliably play under normal circumstances, and to take them on shopping trips. It's the only way to find out for certain.
