  1. Okay,
I've had my ATI card for a while, but have never been able to set it up to record in a format that I find acceptable.
I've finally found one...a default setting called portable. The problem with this was that I try to play the file on another computer it won't play. I even tried to play it with xbox media center which can normally handle anything and it wouldn't play. Why won't these files play on anything but my computer. Are they using some bogus codec which only comes with ATI cards?

Also, when I try to create my own divx setting I select mpeg layer-3 for the audio. When I do this, the only options I can see are all 0 Bit.
How can I get different mpeg layer-3 codecs installed so I can get somethin like 128 bit.

    ~Eric

Portable is MPEG 4, I'm presuming you need the ATI software on the PC to play it.

  4. I read digitafaq and couldn't find anything about mp3 codecs.
I want to record either divx or xvid but I can't get a good audio codec. Any ideas?

Quit using presets. Go make your own, and specify the audio and video format you want. MMC 9 does this MPEG4 and all. Same principle as the MPEG/AVI guides, just a different codec.

Thats what I'm trying to do, but I cant get a decent mp3 encoder selected. I installed easy cd da extractor / file converter which uses LAME mp3 encoding but that codec won't show up in ATI's MMC. I will try the above listed thing with windows media player 10.

  7. Okay, I went and installed windows media player 10 which was supposed to come with a new mp3 codec. I couldn't get MMC to detect it.

Here are my codecs I can choose from....

When I select mp3, these are my only choices and they all sound like crap...

They probably will sound pretty grim, look at how many bits they are sampling. Looks like you may have an installation problem there somewhere. Why not try the ATI MPEG Audio encoder, I've just tried it on my machine and it seems to work well.

  10. I'll give it a try, I don't want to record stuff that won't be able to play on anything else.

Well, if a DVD player plays MPEG Layer III audio, it'll very likely also play MPEG Layer II audio. I would suggest trying a clip on a CD-RW at minimum. Never hurts to test. That's what the hobby is about.

I have no idea why you are getting those bad settings.

Nobody ever said anything about a DVD player or burning what I'm recording.

I tried using the ATI Mpeg encoder like Richard_G said but now it seems like whatever I record with the audio is out of sync with the video.

I guess its time to re-install my ATI stuff

I've not tried, but can't you also use VirtualDub for something like Divx/Xvid?

Keep in mind, these are not supposed to be capturing formats. Results are almost always inferior to standard capturing methods with high compression re-encoding to these other things.
