  1. I have a Toshiba 3960 connected to a Toshiba 30HFX84 HDTV set and whenever a bright flash of light takes place during the playback of a DVD – my TV screen will go black for a second and then come back. The audio never drops – just the video. I have the DVD player connected via the component hookups – the problem disappears when you use the S-Video or the composite cable connections. I have tried a new set of expensive cables to no avail.

I have also tried another 3960 – and it still displayed the same problem. I even talked the retailer into letting me take another TV of the same model home to test – and the same problem was there on the new TV set. So that’s two TV’s and two Toshiba DVD players and I still have the same problem. I’m at a loss – called Toshiba and the guy in customer service “has never heard of the problem….”. Any ideas on this? It seems more likely that the problem is the DVD player rather than the TV – but I’m not sure of anything at this point. I actually exchanged the Toshiba 3960 this afternoon for a Sony progressive scan model and will see if that corrects the problem. If not – I am completely baffled.

    Help!

  2. Problem solved......purchased a slightly more expensive Sony branded progressive scan DVD player yesterday - took it home and the video loss problem with bright flashes is GONE. Frustrating to get two identical Toshiba 3960's and have them have the same defect. Lesson learned - if you want to use component hookups on your DVD player - do not buy the bottom barrel model from Toshiba......the 3960 in my mind has a serious flaw in this regard.
