  1. Flash.... combined with MPEG encoding the next generation camcorders will store video on flash memory in MPEG2 format.
What about MPEG4? Or is it not hq enough to replace MPEG2 later in the future?

Yup your right.... but imagine the size of those flash cards... 50 - 100 Gigs.... but with the right encoder you would never look at an avi file again...

That would be great! Can you imagine... no more encoding!

Honestly, The actual CF cards are what, 2"X1 1/2". The size is the same for the 16GB CF card. If it's figured out how to get 100GB on that size of a CF card, which may not be a distant future, maybe a higher quality format than MPEG2 will be available. Think of terrabyte capabilities and compact technology. If that becomes low end cost at any point in time, the quality of stored data will signifigantly be improved. It's evolved that way already. Did you ever hear of Mega-pixel technology in 1995? I don't recall a floppy ever being able to handle a blank picture with a 5MP rating.

True. Just like back in the MSDOS days when Microsoft said that they projected that no computer would ever need more than 32 MB of memory..... I'd love to go back in time and show Bill Gates my hd.

What they probably meant was "no computer (slower than a 486) would ever need more than 32MB of memory".

  8. I think a 3.5" CF/SD card could hold 50GB no problem and it would be easier to handle(less likely to get lost).

So, soon, we may have camcorders the size of the Cannon Elfs capturing anywhere from 1/2D1 to HDDVD (1440x1080 still seems a little low... thought it would be higher)

That will be nice.... quick drive format on your card and your ready to capture another coupla' hours of video. Download the compliant MPEG2's to your computer... cut, slice, transition and burn.... nice

EDIT -- Garibaldi, why aren't you in the OT class picture? Or did I miss you on there.

That would be nice.... just cut author and burn!

That class picture sticky? I haven't looked at it yet, I will though. 8)

Think of the resolution storage you could hold for 2 hours of video on a 200GB flash device the size of a 3.5" floppy.

Depends on what new material they make them out of. I know they are working on cubit zirconia (manufactured diamond) processors. They wouldn't require cooling like current processors hold and they potentially have the ability to process tons more information and faster than current processors. Apply that type of technology to flash and you've got something that can withstand heat, send & receive information at high speeds, and store incredible amounts of information.

What about that new carbon-based material that they are developing to possibly use on a space elevator? From what I've read it would only have to be about as thick as a piece of paper... let could carry aroud 13 tons. I dunno how that could help with flash tech but maybe if its that strong its probably very heat resistent.

If I were you I wouldn't openly state Bucky's balls as being cool or playing with them at all.

  24. Not bad. I saw a few weeks ago that the new 16 GB compact flash card came out... it costs half as much to make as the 8 GB so they are getting cheaper.. that's a good thing! I have a 512 myself.

But the cost per MB can't even come close to recordable or even rewritable DVD media.

At the moment. I'm sure disc R(w) media will be lowest in cost for a very long time to come and probably will not phase out, but I think the flash technology will still definitely get lower in cost and be more abundantly available. You'll probably be getting AOL v.14.1.9.0 on a flash drive sometime in the future.

Honestly, I still love getting the AOL mailers. I microwave the disc and keep the cases. The Super Jewel Cases are flashy for storing DVDs & console games.

Can you actually put a cd in the microwave? What happens to it? I have a collection of them, thinking of hanging them on the wall.

only for about 5 sec. Unless you have a dedicated microwave for this purpose. It's also how I dispose of costers so I don't get them confused with good discs just laying around. Then I hang them. Place them label side down on a paper towel when you do place them in a microwave.

I wonder what it would be like seeing a cake go for about 40 seconds on an acid trip?

    That's great!
