I just upgaded my system to Windows XP and I haven't gotten around to installing the Creative or Nero application programs that came with my CD writer. I know the instructions say that you're supposed to finalize the CD that you write the upgrade too. But, after playing with my ILO and seeing that finalizing DVD media isn't necessary when writing to -RW media, I thought I would give it a try with CD-RW media.
It worked. I can't guarentee it'll work for you. Write the firmware to a blank cd-rw disc and stick it in your ILO.

The ILO will allow you to use an un-finalized CD-R or RW to update the firmware. If you don't want to waste a full disc, just burn the file to a CD-R and do not close it. You will be able to update the recorder and then use the disc for something else. While experimenting with hacking the HD04 firmware, I used the same disc almost 10 times while editing and writing the file to the disc to try it out. The recorder was able to read the disc each time.

I'm curious. Do you know why the ilo website insists that you finalize the media?

Probably because it gives ILO a standard supported method and it keeps them from getting any support calls just for that issue.
I could imagine, if they didn't make that statement, how many people would call and ask how it's done.
