Can anyone explain exactly what to do with the filters that come with the dsl self-install kit. I don't actually have a kit; the questions are from reading about installing dsl yourself. I'm trying to decide whether to install it myself (If its fairly simple) or hire a professional. How many filters actually come with a basic one pc dsl self-install kit. If you have more than one phone on the same line connected in your home, then which of the phone jacks do you connect the dsl filter and modem line to? How would you know if its best for me to use a jumper to connect the demarc box and filter, run a line from the filter thats outside, to where the dsl modem is inside? Can anyone give me some in-depth answers to these question? Also, please tell inform me on anything else that I'd need to do that I forgot to ask about.

I don't have it, but if I have this down correctly, you need a filter for every line BUT the internet hookup.

A friend lost her DSL, went to cable, gave me her spare stuff, a shitload of filters with the modem.

The good news is they are relatively cheap.

    Cheers,

Don't know what you are talking about outside. Like George said, you need a filter on all the lines except the one that goes into the modem. Its not too hard to install. The box they sent me had like 6 filters in it. You just get the plug closest to where you are going to hook it up and run that phone line right into the modem. Then plug the modem into the computer. There you go.

The outside line that I was referring to comes from this article:

"He would start at the "demarc box" (a little box where the phone line comes into the house, see Network Interface Device Boxes.) He added a little box (alternatively called a splitter, filter, low-pass filter, or technically a "ASDL NID POTS Splitter") to the wall next to the demarc box. In the demarc box, he disconnected all wires that went to the phones inside the house and moved them over to the new little box. Then he ran a jumper from the demarc box to the filter.
He would then run a wire from the filter, around and through the house, to wherever your computer lived.
He would put a jack on the wall there, mark it "DSL", plug the DSL modem into it, connect it to your computer, and even configure your operating system with the proper addresses and options and such to get you connection up and make sure it was working."

So as far as the filters go, do you guys mean that if I have four rooms with a phone jack in each room, then a filter is to be connected to each phone jack?

  5. Verizon DSL self install kits come with 5 line filters that you hook between the phone and the wall jack. Usually, if you do not follow the self install route and have a tech dispatched to install it they will (should) split the line at the DMARC or inside the house at your junction box so that the DSL signal only gets routed to the wall jack that you will be using for DSL. The main advantage to this is that you do not have to install filters on all of your phones (unless you share the same wall jack for voice and DSL which in this case the filter would only go on the voice side of that particular jack). The splitter also eliminates many of the complaints about excess noise that occasionally appears on voice calls even though filters were in use.
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

  6. Very simple install. Of course, they'll have to come out to activate you first.
