  1. First off, I'm a newbie, so if I'm in the wrong place, please forgive me...

I purchased some DVD's from Europe which are in PAL format, and they won't play in my Panasonic DVD player. They do, however, play in my Apple Computer DVD player. Is there a way to convert or burn somehow, so they will play in my Panasonic DVD player? I tried using DVD Backup program and Toast to burn a copy, but it didn't work. I also have DVD2OneX... but I don't see anything in there that might help.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome.

    Thanks!

  2. You will have to convert the PAL DVD to NTSC format. Rip the DVD into a VOB file and then use DVD Converter (it is part of MPEG2WORKS). It take time to do the conversion but the results are good.
If you want all the menus and extras thats more time and more software ....

Just some facts and a question:

    Question first:
Why did the ripped and converted copy not work? (MacTheRipper+DVD2OneX+Toast)

    The facts:
I live in Germany. The DVD Players sold here can play PAL and NTSC DVDs. Important is that they are Region Code 2 or code free.

DVD Players here have a menu where you can set how they handle NTSC (in your case that would be how they handle PAL) DVDs. Either the output will be NTSC or PAL 60Hz.

If your TV is multi-standard (PAL,NTSC,SECAM, 50 and 60 Hz variations), it is not necessary to truly convert PAL to NTSC. In your case propably NTSC 50.

Just rip the DVD with MacTheRipper. Now you have the DVD files code free. Shrink them using DVD2OneX and burn a DVD-R.

The copy you now have is code free but still PAL 50.

Consult you manuals of the TV and DVD Player to find out more about their features.

If you really need true PAL to NTSC conversion, you might try ffmpegX or the conversion tool that is in the MPEG2Works package.

    Cheers,

If you have a lot of DVDs, converting them all will ultimately be a huge waste of time. I recommend you purchase the Philips DVP642 DVD player.. it costs about US$65. It plays PAL, NTSC, and ignores Macrovision. It can also be switched to Region 0 ("region all") with a simple sequence of keys.
