  1. Here's my goal: Take 10 jpg's, apply 4 seconds to each image, then compile(the string of images, if you will) into an avi or mpeg. Is there a software package out there that will take stills, set some time to each still then crunch it all into a video?

I'm interested in a stand alone mpeg/avi file.

I'm not interested in a stand alone "photo album cd-r" that can be played on a stand alone DVD.

    TIA!

If you want a really small file and it doesn't have to be edited together with other video, here's a neat trick. Use VideoMach to load the stills. Set a frame rate of 0.25 fps!
Each still will play for 4 seconds.

If you have (or can get/buy) Adobe Premiere, you can make slide shows easliy. I made a slide show using Premiere that was 26 minutes long, with music and transition effects and it looked great!
