    Sometimes i download movies and they wont pay because i am missing a certain codec to plat them.

    What is a codec and how do i use them?

    Ok i understand what one is now.

    What type of codecs does Mac use or am i kinda screwed if the file i want to open was done on a IBM?

    Most codecs exist on both Mac and IBM platforms. A few very old and very new codecs might be only one platform. Quite rare though.

    So if i download a movie and it says " can not open due to missing codec " i should just trash it then?

    No, you should investigate what codec it is asking for
    first, then if it doesn't exist, then trash the movie.

    Easiest way to do this, try playing the movie in VLC,
    and using the Info command, find out what codecs
    it is using to play back the movie. *shrugs*

    I searched first.....

    VLC looks like an IBM program, is there a site that has it for a Mac?

    Well my movies work but i cant figure how to burn them on a dvd because Toast 6 says they are missing required codec to work.

    That's because Toast relies on QuickTime, not VLC. So use VLC to identify the codec. Then get that codec for QuickTime, if available.

    How do you use VLC to identify the codec?

    I went through all of the prefrences but still cant figure it out.

    ok one codec says XVID and the other says mpga.

    Am i correct?

    If i am how do i find out if these are in my quicktime or how do i add them to my quicktime?

    Is there a big file i can download with these in the program or something?

    That's XVID video and MPEG-1 audio.

    The 3ivx decoder will handle XVID just fine. The installer will add the codec for you.

    I am trying DivX Doctor II, so far it worked on one movie.

    I will post my results when its done with another movie.
