Sense the Philips dvp642 and kiss dvd players can't play every format, all subtitles, etc why don't people build their own dvd players instead so it will play all formats ? Not a actual dvd player but like another pc, not all top of the line stuff, that way you can upgrade the codecs when need be, etc. Its like you can release your own updates whenever see fit instead of having to wait and hope new upgrades come soon.

The xbox will do all formats and is even cheaper and not to much more than the Philips and less than the Kiss depending on which one you bought! I like the Philips but it doesn't make sense if the xbox isn't to much more and supports everything.

The posts are basically correct, but I must disagree with max2 on the cost issue. Anyone who is interested can look into it like I did and I'm sure they will come to the same conclusion. Doing everything required to mod a Xbox is more expensive than you might think. I thought seriously about the Xbox mod and realized the Philips DVP-642 was so much cheaper I couldn't justify buying and modding the Xbox. Cost is all relative and what was too much for me might not be for someone else. I do agree with what max2 hinted at but didn't come out and say - Kiss DVD players are too expensive.

I have an Xbox and I must admit it doesn't have the best picture for a DVD player. Actually both my cheap Zenith DVB410 and my new Phillips 642 have a way better picture. The great thing with the Xbox is that it will pretty much play anything you through at it. I use it as a last resort (it's not THAT bad).
