I wasn't able to find much in the way of reviews on this unit, but it seemed to be pretty close to what I was looking for, so I bought one.

First let me say that this unit is not for everyone. It's a combo burner/set-top like recorder that records on every DVD format (except RAM), including Dual layer +.

It's not the cheapest burner out there (by far). I was looking for a set top like recorder small enough to use in the field and this is the first one I found (the only one actually) that you can connect a video camera to and record directly to DVD, and it's no larger than an external computer burner.

It has it's own encoder for recording through composite or S-Video connections (no firewire). The recording quality at 1 hour and 2 hour modes is quite good. The only other mode is 6 hours and I doubt I'll ever even check that one out. It creates it's own simple menus, though for titles only, not for chapters.
It can create chapters automatically at 5, 10, and 15 minutes, or you can place them manually wherever you like.

There is no video out, so you can't even hook it up to a television to use as a DVD player. It can connect to a computer using USB 2.0 though, so you can watch DVD's on a computer.

You can use it as an external DVD burner with a computer in all the usual ways. The manual mentions DRU-710A, I assume thats the IDE equivelent.

Pros:

Dual Layer recording.
Very quiet.
Portable.
Records all formats except RAM.

Cons:

No video out.
No remote.
No firewire.
No tuner (though you can connect it to a cable/satellite box).
No timer.
In set top mode only records to the + format.
Expensive for an external burner.
