Loading Noise

Im searching on an IDE i just plugged in im leaving the computers side off, its really noisy when im doing a search from the hard drive its jst making that loading noise would that a computer would make but this is not noisy just quite loud..does it mean the hdd may be failing??
Its a partitioned big 160 gb drive i was doing a fix for a divx movie and as it was loading on the H: part of the drive (H is the drive name) it was not making that loading sound at all. But from G: it was making a loud loading noise..how come??
This might be because it wasn't plugged in properly actually the big plug was but the white on with 4 pins wasn't, this hasnt messed up the hard drive has it??

If you were to plug or unplug the power cable (4 pin) from your HD, it's possible but unlikely to damage it, but I wouldn't take that chance. Make sure you turn off your computer and unplug the power cord it before you make any internal connections.

As far as the noise, some drives are noisy. Sometimes before they die, they make a lot of clicking noises. However if your drive needs defragging, it will also make more noise because the drive has to spend more time finding parts of the file..

If you check in your computer BIOS, you may have the option of running S.M.A.R.T . This will usually tell you in advance that your drive may be failing.

Ive plugged this HDD in b4 without realising you had to unplug the back power cable do you think that may have damaged it?

Yeah i think ill defrag it with disk keeper when i get back from work.

How do i get into the bios to check S.M.A.R.T and when im on S.M.A.R.T what do i do?

I done a cluster fix by right clicking on the drive, going onto properties and it seems to be quieter now. But i would still like to know how to do that bios thing aswell..

Ive just tried to defrag a partitioned drive with disk keeper and it defrags for one 1 and then says there r no bad files etc it cant defrag for one sec theres like..30 gigs worth of stuff on there and theres a lot of reserved system space it says on there it shown a map kind of thing it shown about 8 inches of reserved system space, loads of blue which is high performance files or something then loads of whiute which is free system space..i dont get the reserved system space..whats that?

To get into BIOS on most computers, you click the 'delete' key when the computer first starts. Don't worry, it won't delete anything. That should take you to the BIOS screen. You can also do a restart and click it then.

In BIOS, you look for S.M.A.R.T and enable it. In my BIOS it's under 'Advanced BIOS Features'. It may also be there with the hard drive configurations. The BIOS screen usually has instructions at the bottom. Don't change anything you don't understand. Save when exiting.

I doubt you damaged the HD. Just be careful unplugging anything with power applied. Some computers keep some power on the system when off, that's why I unplug them when making connections.

I don't use Diskkeeper, so not much I can tell you about that.

Reserved system space depends on the computer and operating system setup. My laptop reserves about 8G for restore and recovery. You also have protected system files that may take some space.
