I have a Pioneer DVR-A08XL and ULEAD DVD player but when I try to view the bonus features on (original) DVD's, it tells me to insert the DVD into a DVD-ROM drive. Are DVD writers not capable of this or might there be a fix for this?

Those bonus features are usually programs that automatically start running when you insert the disc (if you have Auto-insert notification on). When you're watching the disc with ULEAD it is the same as watching on a TV set with a DVD player, so you're seeing the same screen.
Try shutting down Ulead, ejecting and re-inserting the disc, and see if anything starts automatically. If not, find the drive letter in Windows Explorer and double click and see if there are executable files to run on them.
Your Pioneer will run it fine once you find the way to make them start.
