Using TMPGEnc and Video CD 2.0 and tutorial produced files test_1.cd, Test_1.hck, Test_1.msc and Test_1.toc. .cd file will not play on any of the computers I own. I assumed (from tutorial) that I would be able to play file on computer to verify if I had gone through the tutorial correctly. None of these files have file extensions that I view people discussing in forums concerning VCDs they have burned and play on their computers/dvd players so I assume I've missed something important.
I have PII 300, PIII 733 and P4 1800 computers (networked), Studio 7 DV, Studio DV 200 w/Premier 6 (not proficient with yet), Sony Digital 8 and SVHS camcorders, Pioneer 343 DVD player, etc...
I figure I should be able to encode VCDs, I just do not understand the process. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.
Nick

Thanks for responding..........
I want to encode .mpg files I have made on my computer to a VCD to play in Pioneer DV-343.
I assumed that the movies I made as .mpg files encoded with the VCD preset(in Pinnacle's Studio DV/Studio 7 upgrade) burned on my Sony CD-RW would play in 343 unit. They didn't. I read some of the literature on vcdhelp site
and downloaded TMPGEnc, Video CD 2.0 Toolkit, tutorial for Video CD Toolkit:The Short story and Nero 5.5.5.1 demo. Did the tutorial resulting in files test_1.cd (test_1 being project name), Test_1.hck, Test_1.msc and Test.1.toc. Tutorial states that Windows Media Player will play the
test_1.cd file (which it didn't) or that the file could be recorded to a CD using a CD-R recorder (which I haven't attempted because I couldn't get the file to play with WMP).
Obviously, I am confused. I do not know if the file isn't being recognized by WMP because of wrong name/file extension or if I have to convert it somehow or what.
Thank you for taking the time to instruct this neophyte..........

Your 343 should play vcd's and SVCD's with no prob as I have tested the player at the local store when I was shopping for a new player, but if you want to make sure, download on of the test video files on this site found at comparisions, and burn a vcd with nero, make sure to select vcd.

Unable to use Nero as it states that my demo period has expired although it is the first/only time I have ever downloaded and attempted to utilize.
I still do not understand why files will not play in WMP and therefore feel that burning to a cd is getting ahead of myself.

Just to get you started on this, taje the MPEG made from TMPgEnc (b4 it went anywhere near Video CD toolkit). If this plays in WMP then download VCDEasy (from the left). Add your mpeg in this and click go (after setting it up in the settings section). Voila la CD.
Once verified that you can work it up to this stage try the video toolkit (I could never get the damn thing to work) -
Have burned two VCD and 1 SVCD using TEMPGEnc and Nero 5.5.6.4 that have played on Pioneer 343 unit. But to me they dont seem to compare to VHS quality let alone SVHS quality. Sort of dark and drab. Any way to improve quality?

Fishfinder, the two CD's you created (VCD/SVCD) what was the source file used ? was it an AVI/DivX or a DVD Rip ?
