  1. I have read the posts, and I apologize if this has been addressed before, but, again - newbie here...

I'm about to buy a DVD burner, and would like to make stuff for home consumption (from my camera), and burn it onto a dvd - one for me, one for my friends in France -- Can I do this?

What do I need to do this? I'm presuming I need
    1) something to make the video both NTSC and SECAM
    2) be able to burn a Region Free disk

so... which is done by software, and which is done by hardware, and if anyone could give me some recommendations for what to get, I'd really appreciate it (and we're talking home budget, not big budget)

thanks, and apologize if I'm beating a dead horse here,

no such thing as a secam dvd ... they use pal dvd instead ..

so make a ntsc and pal dvd ..... use procoder express , does a good job doing both ..

your disk will be region free with all standard dvd authoringware ...

  3. Thanks for the reply

I'm confused tho, French TVs view content in SECAM format don't they? but they can also view PAL formatted DVD's? Is this a function of their DVD players?

no such thing as a secam dvds ... they use pal for dvd disks there ..

it may be confusing -- but trust me on this ..

SECAM (Sequential Couleur Avec Memoire or Sequential Colour with Memory (or System Even Crappier than the American Method ) color TV standard was introduced in the early 1960's and implemented in France.

SECAM uses the same bandwidth as PAL but transmits the colour information sequentially. SECAM runs on 625 lines/frame with the same framerate as the PAL does, 25fps.

SECAM is used in France, former French colonies and in former communist countries in Europe.

Because of its similiarity with PAL (same resolution, same framerate), all of the modern video systems, such as DVD, VCD and SuperVHS use PAL internally (for storing the data in the storage media, etc) and just change the color encoding to SECAM when outputting the signal back to SECAM TV.

  5. thanks again for your response!

Ok, last question - are there different varieties of PAL to be concerned about?

I'm presuming a Sony DRU710A, the bundled Nero and procoder express will get me where I want to go?

    thanx again!

I noticed a thread over here

it is region free if you dont put a region on your authored dvd

ALL dvd authoring apps that are not professional level do not add regions -- and even with pro level authoring apps - you would have to tell them to do so ...

  10. so there's no hardware aspect to the Region issue? When I install the DVD burner it's not going to presume or prompt me for my locale, and do anything ... counterproductive?
