Sorry to see you haven't had any responses to your question yet, so I'll try to help. I was looking at your computer details, and I noticed a couple of things. First, you list 98SE and linux 9. Do you mean Red Hat Linux 9? I will assume this is a dual boot system. I have a short list of linux video apps you can research using google. I'll leave it to your research to see if they will work with RH9 and your computer specs.

    Cinelerra - http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3
    LiVES - http://www.xs4all.nl/~salsaman/lives/
    Kino - http://kino.schirmacher.de/

There may be a few more, but you'll have to google for them. Another thing that may interest you is getting a Live CD for dyne:bolic linux. It is just another linux distrobution that you can run off of a bootable CD and take a look at the apps I've mentioned above. All you need to do is download the .iso and burn to a CD. Set your computer to boot from CD, and this distro of linux will boot for you to play with. That will at least let you look at these apps.

The iso can be found at http://dynebolic.org/

  3. Good call TekkieMan. What is Linux 9, do you mean Red Hat like TekkieMan said? I can recommend a couple more apps to that list, and BTW I'll be glad to help with any questions or problems you might have. You can find these apps at http://freshmeat.net . As you start using linux more and more freshmeat will become a great resource.

Avidemux- virtual dub for linux, I would dl the CVS
Tovid- quite a few diff formats to mpeg for vcd, svcd or dvd
gopdit- like cutterman or mpeg2schnitt.... lets you cut an mpeg
mplayer- great media player, I don't use it personally cause I've had alot of trouble trying to install it
xine, another great media player, the one I use
    ffmpeg- mpeg encoder
    transcode- video encoder
qdvd author- linux frontend for DVD Author, similar to GFD
dvd styler- another dvd authoring app
    amarok- a great music player
    audacity- an audio editor

No, it won't affect the dual boot at all. They are linux apps and will load, install, and run in the linux partition. My concern is that you only list a 40G drive. Assuming an even spilt between OS'es, you don't seem to have much room for apps, let alone video.

Yeah, especially when dealing with video you can eat the space up pretty quickly.

Do you know how to install from source code incase those apps don't have a RPM?
To install from source is pretty easy, just unzip the .tar.gz file and then in a konsole:
    cd /[the extracted folder]/
    ./configure
    make
    su
    make install

  7. I recommend 'checkinstall' for installing from source. It can do many things, like make an RPM for you from source or track installed files for easy removal later on.

Just to add to this list for future searches, I ran across another multimedia related distro like dyne:bolic. It's called mediainlinux, and has a Live CD. The package list was pretty decent. Besides the video editing packages listed above (and a few others), it has several audio and graphics apps.

Two other applications I didn't mention were broadcast2000 and MainActor. MainActor is a commercial app, but is pretty decent. There's a demo available, which is fully functional, but adds a watermark. They have Windows and linux versions.

I didn't try to D/L the ISO, but I will give it a shot when I get home tonight and have access to my DSL. It only takes me a little over 1/2 hour to D/L a full ISO.

FYI - a member of linuxquestions.org is setting up a new site with every ISO torrent. I don't know how long it will take to set up, but it should be good!

    Same as here: tekkieman

If you're talking about a link the ISO torrent site, there isn't one yet. The thread is on linuxquestions. I would just put a watch on that thread.
