Hi, all. What is a VOB ID and how does it differ from a chapter? I didn't see this in the Glossary so I figured I'd ask... Thanks.

Basically a chapter is created when you create a Program. A Vob ID is a cell. You can have many cells in each Program. Its just different heirarchal groupings.
You've got the VTS, then a Title, then a PGC, then a program (chapter), and then cells (vob id.) -
Thanks for the reply. That helps, but I'm still a little confused (sorry). Let me ask it this way:
I'm ripping an episode DVD with Decrypter and would like to have each VOB be a single, complete episode -- how would I want to set the rip parameters on Decrypter to make that happen?
I had Decrypter set at the default 1gig setting, so the VOBs were a mess in terms of being coherent episodes. If I set it to 'chapters', I'll have multiple VOBs per episode. I know I can join them later but just wondered if there was a way to have one episode = one VOB? Would that be a title?
Thanks for the help.

It depends on how the DVD is authored. You can't rip by title but you could rip by PGC, which in most cases would be the same thing.
You see, there are different ways to organize things when making a DVD and the answer to your question depends on your particular DVD. They might have put each episode in a different PGC, or they might have placed them all in the same PGC.
The simple answer is, if there is more than 1 pgc try ripping each one independantly by using IFO mode in DVD Decryptor and deselecting all other PGCs except the one you want to rip. Go to tools/settings and under file splitting select none. For most episodic DVDs, this will work.
If your episodes are not broken up by PGC, then you will need to use something to analyze the disk's structure. If you open the IFO in IFOEdit you can get a breakdown of where everything is stored. You'll need to rip the movie to your hard drive first, or run AnyDVD otherwise you won't be able to view any of the video. You will see PGC 1 and then down the left side it will see [Ch 1] [Pg 01], then [Ch 2] [Pg 02], ect... These are your chapters, which as I explained earlier are created by storing the video in a program. You will see that within each chapter are multiple cells, stored as Vob Ids. So you need to double click on these and see what is what. If everything is stored in one PGC, then episode two will start on one of the chapters. Note which one. Then in DVD Decryptor deselect this chapter and all others that follow. Now when you rip, you will only be ripping episode 1. Then highlight those for episode 2 only and rip, etc... Again, make sure that you set file splitting to none just in case one of your episodes runs larger than 1 gig.
