  1. I assume FFMPEG and BeSweet are the only free apps that can convert to AC3, sad their quality isn't good. I can't figure out how to get Vegas to export the audio AC3 stream. Say for example I want to save the audio stream as audio1.ac3 on my desktop, how would I do that?

  3. Sweet, that's perfect; Thanks Canadatrek.

If I render a surround sound audio stream and play it on a TV with only stereo, will there be troubles (low vloume for voices etc.? Would it be safer to render as stereo from the start, or is it a good idea to have both as options on the DVD?

  4. What ever you render to,if your DVD/Tv doesnt support it,Then it will Down-sample.

  5. @Celtic_Druid or monzie; Since BeSweet & FFMPEG use the same encoder, which version do you have that creates DVD compliant AC3 streams & what settings do you use. The problem I usually hear about is that BeSweet will muss up the sample rate. Goes in 48000hz and comes out otherwise. When it's set to output 48000hz the audio gets slowed down/speeded up.

I've been using ffmpeggui for about 6 months now, converting to all different bitrates in AC3 with no problems whatsoever on 4 different DVD players.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Well I use a more recent version of ffmpeg, but it was my understanding that the AC3 compliance problems were fixed ages ago.

With BeSweet it is a matter of the version of ac3enc.dll used.

HeadAC3he can also encode AC3 by the way, once again same encoder though so same quality. Also before anyone says that it can't encode AC3, you need a recent alpha version.

I'm using Beta 3 Build 3 (if that helps)..and its 100% OK at all bitrates....EXCEPT for those tricky avi's and then I must use 192 for some reason....and NO I dont know why...but it DOES work AND its VERY fast..and i cant tell any difference between 192 and anything higher anyway....(maybe i'm slightly deaf)....but as we all know as things go higher the difference becomes less and less..so I just stick with 192 to start with and it works 99.99% of the time with zero sync probs.

  9. Does anyone know how to import an ac3 soundtrack into the Vegas timeline. I want to stretch the ac3 for a PAL to NTSC conversion. I convert the video using avisynth, not Vegas.

I've tried importing the vob by renaming it to mpg but the ac3 audio does not appear in the timeline. Is there any way to frameserve a 6 channel ac3 into the timeline?? I do not want to convert to wave files first and then remux.

I've heard that Ulead Mediastudio Pro 7 can do this. Anyone tried??

I did find a command line utility to do what I want but it either removes or duplicates ac3 frames to lengthen or shorten the ac3, without any conversion at all!! I haven't run it through my stereo yet to see if I can hear any side effects but I will soon.

with vegas -- you have to convert to wave files , adjust , and then re-render to ac3

The only issue i found with ffmpeggui was if you feed it 44khz mp2 sometimes it throws it out of sync when encoding to 48khz ac3.The percentage to stretch pal to ntsc is 95.904% if you dont want to use besweet.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.
