It is thought by many (including me) that there is very little difference in end quality (to the point where it's not really noticable) when using the very slow (highest quality) setting, but the increase in time that it takes to do this is phenomenally longer than using motion estimate search. I'd suggest you do a couple of 1 minute samples with each and see the differences in both time and quality for yourself
    If in doubt, Google it.

  2. Sounds good.
I also noticed you chose the lower resolution, as opposed to the 720x480. Do you do this most of the time?

It depends on the quality and frame size of your source, and also the bitrate you need to use to fill up the disc. Often you will find that upsizing makes a picture look far worse, especially if it's a low-res, low bitrate clip you've downloaded. Conversely, if your source is DVD 720 X 480, it's gonna look shite at 1500kbps (w/ 192kbps audio, 1500kbps will get you 6 hours on a disc, for example). IMO you need to find that happy medium that gives you acceptable quality for the filesize you desire.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. Thanks! Wonder if I could pick your brain again. I've been encoding the way you recommended without probs and putting on to DVDs and suddenly ran into a problem with an .avi.
I used TMGenc to encode and it goes through the encode process, for video only, but when I go to play it I get a blank screen although I can tell something is running and the counter is moving?
This same .avi I noticed would not run in Media Player but Nero's showtime player was able to run it?
When I tried to use TMGenc wizard and encode video and sound together I got a result with a dark image but sound was playing.
Any theories or suggestions or solutions.
    THANKS!

Try raising the directshow priority, 3rd link below.

  6. I will try that. Would it be a factor if this is an old movie(1954)?

  7. Tried it and failed. I still get audio and no video...I can see some artifact on the dark screen as if it begins to play but then stops....although the counter says differently...open to any suggestions.
This is so frustrating since everything was working fine!
