Yep, will give another try but dont think this is the problem !
Daamon has kindly offered to take my camcorder and try on his machine, have this with me today mate so let me know when you want to meet up today to collect it.
Have also copied a DV-AVI that I captured onto a DVD-RW to have a look at."The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit." -
Actually, to be fair to MOVIEGEEK I re-read that thread, and was wondering did you check out the links in there?
MOVIEGEEK's:

I certainly did !
I downloaded the SP1 files from one of the links to ry those when I had SP2 installed.
Now I am back on SP1, I may try going back to the SP1.cab folder and re-extracting them to see if that has made any difference."The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit." -
Did you see the final comment at the end for the correct way to reinstall them.
-
Yes, i did see the final comment.
Not sure if when I tried it the first time that I extracted the files correctly.
Will try again after Daamon has tried on his machine."The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit." -
Probably another stupid comment, but I have just been thinking back as to what I have done to my PC in the last couple of months.
I recently added 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM, but I already have 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM installed.
Could there be any conflict between the RAM that could cause dropped frames etc ?? -
as long as you are running at the slower speed -- shoudl maybe be ok -- but you never know w/ memory ..
can do weird stuff ---
if u are running at the higher speed - may for sure have some issues (maybe)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

Playback of captured DV AVI is OK.

Well, looks like this was a software or codec problem of some description.
Went home last night and formatted and reinstalled XP SP1 and the transfer of DV-AVI is now working perfectly.
Thanks to everyone for your help !!"The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit." -
How'd you go with trying both memory units separately (256 @ PC2100, 512 @ PC3200)?
Have you installed, or are you going to install, SP2?There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

now would be a VERY good time to image your hard drive to seperate partition and to dvd\r.
-
Didnt try removing the memory, just reinstalled and then it captured correctly so obviously nothing to do with the memory.
Havent installed SP2 yet, was on the PC til 10:30pm last night doing this so will get onto installing updates tonight !
Thanks crazythunder ! I am actually planning to get another hard drive to dedicate to video editing."The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit." -

Symantec Ghost - www.symantec.com
Acronis True Image - www.acronis.com
I use acronis true image. I have heard mixed things about the latest version of ghost (I read, over at http://club.cdfreaks.com, it is a modified version of PowerQuest Drive Image 7. Symantec bought out Powerquest). -

i've used acronis and currently using ghost 9.0. acronis failed ME once and i never went back. the new ghost won't back up if you have a modified boot screen. guess everything has it's bugs, but ghost never failed me. there's also-dantz.

Just wanted to say thankyou to everyone for your help !
It was obviously a software problem somewhere........
Having real problems reinstalling XP now, and then last night my computer just sh*t itself and now wont even boot up, so obviously now have a hardware problem too......
Looks like its time for an upgrade !!"The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit."
