Yep, will give another try but dont think this is the problem !

Daamon has kindly offered to take my camcorder and try on his machine, have this with me today mate so let me know when you want to meet up today to collect it.
Have also copied a DV-AVI that I captured onto a DVD-RW to have a look at.

Actually, to be fair to MOVIEGEEK I re-read that thread, and was wondering did you check out the links in there?

    MOVIEGEEK's:

    Mayer's:

And the SP1 files linked to by thecoalman:

    I certainly did !
I downloaded the SP1 files from one of the links to ry those when I had SP2 installed.

Now I am back on SP1, I may try going back to the SP1.cab folder and re-extracting them to see if that has made any difference.

Yes, i did see the final comment.
Not sure if when I tried it the first time that I extracted the files correctly.
Will try again after Daamon has tried on his machine.

Probably another stupid comment, but I have just been thinking back as to what I have done to my PC in the last couple of months.
I recently added 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM, but I already have 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM installed.
Could there be any conflict between the RAM that could cause dropped frames etc ??

as long as you are running at the slower speed -- shoudl maybe be ok -- but you never know w/ memory ..

    can do weird stuff ---

if u are running at the higher speed - may for sure have some issues (maybe)

Bad news I'm afraid pmcollins... As you suspected - All OK on my machine. Details for the benefit of others:

    1. DV AVI type 1 file captured on your machine. Played back on mine at "double speed", as it does on your PC, and with macroblocks (large pixelation), as it does on yours. See screen print:

    2. Used WinDV to view playback from your cam on my machine - no "capture". All OK, as is on your machine.

    3. "Captured" from your DV cam as DV AVI type 2 using WinDV. Started cam running then hit "Capture" - playback during capture is OK (whereas macroblocks on your PC). No dropped frames.

Playback of captured DV AVI is OK.

    4. "Captured" from your DV cam as DV AVI type 1 using WinDV. Hit "Capture", then started cam running - playback during capture is OK (whereas macroblocks on your PC). 85 dropped frames - this is normal in my experience, it happens when the tape is first rolling.

Playback of captured DV AVI is OK.

    5. "Captured" to DV AVI on my machine using Premiere 6.0. Footage during recording OK. Playback of AVI OK.

    6. "Captured" to DV AVI on my machine using Windows Movie Maker 2. Footage during recording OK. Playback of AVI OK.

Well, looks like this was a software or codec problem of some description.
Went home last night and formatted and reinstalled XP SP1 and the transfer of DV-AVI is now working perfectly.
Thanks to everyone for your help !!

    How'd you go with trying both memory units separately (256 @ PC2100, 512 @ PC3200)?

Have you installed, or are you going to install, SP2?

Didnt try removing the memory, just reinstalled and then it captured correctly so obviously nothing to do with the memory.
Havent installed SP2 yet, was on the PC til 10:30pm last night doing this so will get onto installing updates tonight !

Thanks crazythunder ! I am actually planning to get another hard drive to dedicate to video editing.

you won't regret it. having a second hdd is the best move you can make. you can also make backup images there to store temporarily untill you want to burn it to disc.that is, if you have an imaging program. you should after that firewire fiasco. lol

@ crazythunder - Do you know of / can you recommend any (good) imaging apps? I had a hunt around www.download.com but couldn't find anything...

    Symantec Ghost - www.symantec.com
    Acronis True Image - www.acronis.com

I use acronis true image. I have heard mixed things about the latest version of ghost (I read, over at http://club.cdfreaks.com, it is a modified version of PowerQuest Drive Image 7. Symantec bought out Powerquest).
