  1. I'm using DVD2AVI v1.77.3 to convert VOBs (ripped from DVDs) to SVCDs. I typically create a d2v and encode using TMPGEnc, and this seems to work in most cases. However, I've run into occasional problems where DVD2AVI can't seem to decode the VOB correctly... the resulting video stream contains lots of corruption, and for lack of a better description, it skips lots of frames. The corruption occurs even when I allow dvd2avi to create the video file and omit the TMPGenc encoding. The VOB seems fine because I can play it using winDVD and can encode it to a SVCD using DVDx (although the quality is far inferior to the results I usually achieve with DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc. Anyone come across a similar problem and have any suggestions? Is there a better decoding software that I should consider instead of DVD2AVI?

I don't follow - what do you do instead of create a d2v file?

  3. Sorry, I meant to say when DVD2AVI creates a video preview. Basically, the video appears corrupted during playback in DVD2AVI.

Your dvds you have problems with are probably not progressive and you need to teclimate your vobs.

What do you mean by "corrupted" ? In the preview, there's green patches and/or blockiness/pixelation maybe ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. Yes, I get large areas with green patches and blocks. The playback motion also stutters.

Might I need to pre-process the VOB? What is "teclimate" btw?

I've found that to be the case when the VOBs are copied directly from the disc (ie. the encryption hasn't been properly removed) in the past.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. Use DVD2AVI version 1.76. Certain versions have
bugs as the orignal developer stopped working on
it some years ago and others took over.

The best way to ensure a good version is to
get the copy that comes with SVCD2DVD, install
the package, copy DVD2AVI to another folder
    and remove the package.

  9. The latest and greatest from the DVD2AVI world can be found here:

I would try the latest version there and see if you have the same issues.

  10. Thanks for all the great suggestions, I'll give the older dvd2avi a try. As a side note, I did a short test with virtualdubmod and didn't have any problems, so the issue does indeed seem to be dvd2avi. Also, I'm curious about the idea that the VOB isn't properly decrypted.... is there a tool I can download that will run a decrypt pass on a VOB file? I looked at DVDDecrypter, but it seems to want a DVD device rather than a VOB file.

  11. If you can view/play the single VOB through winDVD without
problems, as you stated, then it is not the VOB that
    is causing you the problem.

I have no idea what tclimite is? Did you mean
    Telecine ?
