DivX is just a video codec, it has nothing to do with audio , well other than the old DivX audio codec that was just WMA V2 which doesn't handle more than 2 channels anyway.

As for multichannel audio, you basically have WMAPro, aac, vorbis, DTS and AC3 all of which can be used with DivX or pretty much any other kind of video.

You can have a multichannel wav file to if you want.

Quite possible. I often take the 5.1 AC3 out of the DVD and use it as audio stream in my DivX/XviD AVIs.
It takes a lot of room tho, so depending on target file size, you might be better off with a 2 channel MP3 @128 kbps.
Then it's up to the player (software or hardware) to support AC3 5.1 as AVI audio...

  5. If filesize is not an issue. Then, I need to do 3 things to backup fav movie.

    1. Encode the video to divx
    2. Grab the audio (multichannel)
    3. Join them afterwards

So the principle is practice makes perfect or get a tested mux tools.

But then I had no idea whats a straightforward, easy, proven problem free mux tools.

Thanks to wonderful people out there who help clear my mind.

    Cheers...

Depends what audio format and what container.

AVIMuxGUI can mux aac, AC3 and DTS to avi and I guess mkv. mkvmerge/mmg can mux vorbis, aac, dts, ac3, etc. to mkv. There are various ogm muxing tools and don't forget VirtualDubMod which can mux avi, ogm and mkv's.
