I'm curious to what speeds other people are ripping at. I was surprised how fast my wife's G4 Powerbook is, compared to my Barton core 2500, at work. I was also surprised at how much faster my 2000 MP system is.

I know drives can make a difference, but putting that aside, here's the results.

    Work computer (XP 2500) - About 4-5X
    Wife's G4 (1.0Ghz?) - About 9X
    Home computer (2000 MP) - 12-15X

I've been adding a lot of songs to my ipod, so although I normally don't care about ripping speeds, I can appreciate the power of my dual cpu machine right now.

99% of the rip speed is actually the drive.. i have a liteon burner and rom the burner will rip a DVD at 12x while the rom at 8x.. the rom has a read speed of 16x both are mostly new..

That's what I thought, but all three drives are rated at the same speed, 40X. I opened up Task Manager on both windows machines, to check on the cpu usage. The single processor machine runs at close to 100%, while the dual processor machine hovers between 75-90%. I figured the limiting factor in the Barton based machine must be the cpu, since it was working at 100% and ripping slower.

I forgot to mention that I'm using itunes. I can't remember what kind of numbers I used to get with cdex.

it might also have something to do with DMA mode thats enabled.. and if the cd and HD are on the same ide cable.. if so that will slow it way down.. the differnt speeds you are seeing is not normal if the drives are all the same.. one more thing.. the rip speed and the read speeds are totally different... so even if they are all 16x read.. the rip speeds can very from 2x to 20x its all dependant on the drive.

PS 100% cpu usage? dayum.. i dont think ive seen anything close to that..

PSS. try WMP and wma.. just for a test.. also try winamp and mp3 or if you have the mp3 mod from WMP try that. see if you get the same...

i assume you are ripping to mp3.. alcohol and nero both use 20% cpu on mine for making cd img

  5. A faster read speed does not necessarily mean a faster rip speed. Many drives have their ripping speed limited by the manufacturers.
