  1. ok, i've been searching the forums (and the web) regarding this topic and there seems to be a lot of different ideas on getting this to work (DivX Doctor II, joining via Quicktime Pro, etc.). so, i'm hoping, once and for all, we can come to some sort of conclusion on the best way of going about this.

    The Situation

I have two .AVI files which, when combined, make up a single movie (ie. movie has been split into two parts, one per AVI file). I would like to combined/join these two files to make a single file that can then be

    a) stored as the single file for playing via MPlayer, Quicktime, etc.
    b) later burned to DVD (thus, will need to run file from a) through ffmpegX to create DVD burnable file(s).

so, basically, i need to come up with a way of joining these two AVI files resulting in a single file (for use on my laptop) that can also, later, be converted and burned as a DVD.

any help would be greatly appreciated!
    regards,
    kristin.

  2. Have you tried ffmpegX's "Join" tool?

Thanks major! I know there's a "join" button in the "tools" tab window, but i don't really know how to use it. From poking around, i know you have to define your two source files via the browse buttons, but i'm not sure what settings to use throughout the rest of the program before i join the two files? basically, i want to keep the resulting single file the same quality (audio/video) as the two originals i'm joining - is there a tutorials or "how to" on the settings I should be using to keep everything the same as the original source?
    thanks again!
    kristin.

  4. No settings, you just click "join" and it will just join, but the two files must have been encoded with same settings (size, bitrate, etc).

    DOH! so easy!
thanks so much - this is EXACTLY what I was looking for!
    thanks again!

  6. I have two halves of a movie and each time I try and join it goes to 1:51:51 and crashes the program.

Is this a bug or a feature?

  7. Which would be the total size of the joined movie?

  8. Opps.... sorry. I just noticed the time of what had joined up before I trashed it. I didn't bother with the size. It's long gone. If I ever try this again I'll take note.

    Again, sorry.

  9. in quicktime you can use the quicktime script "start movie 2 with movie 1"
movies do not have to be same format.

the easiest editor to use is simplemovieX. try it, you'll like it. you can edit mpegs and not re-encode. also able to join disimilar movies

Everybody talks about joining DivX files with ffmpegX as if it works fine so I'm assuming it does for everybody but me. Whenever I join two DivX files it claims to have been successful but though the resulting file plays in VLC correctly when I try to play it in Quicktime it cuts off half way through the second half. Sadly they do the same in my stand alone LG DivX player when I burn them to DVD. can anyone offer any suggestions on this or point me to any past threads concerning it. (I'm New) I've done a seach but it havn't come up with anything so far

  11. It may depend on the size of the file. Large AVI may be unpredictable (given the fact this format was created ages ago and never meant to hold >1GB of data).

Ok Thanks that seems a possible reason, If it's the case then it should be affecting others apart from me. If any one could feedback on if they've managed to get two files of DivX (with AAC or MP3 sound. within an avi file) of around 700MB joined together and the result to play fully in Quicktime or on a stand alone player please let me know what your settings were. Or is it impossible?
I've joined them successfully in Quicktime and then saved it but it obviously saves as a Mov. file this plays great in Quicktime as you'd expect but won't on the LG DivX player. simply changing the extension to avi doesn't work. putting it through ffmpegX again with everything set on passthrough doesn't work for me either.(though I've read somewhere here that it's worked for others) it produces either an empty avi file or it changes the resolution somehow. Once again any advice on settings would be a help.

OK it's a couple of days since I made this reply first and I have now found D-Vision 3 which not only joins AVIs together so they work in Quicktime (and my stand alone set-top player) every time, but also appears to be able to join more than two togethet at once! fantastic. Fan as I am of ffmpeg on this occasion I've really got to recomend the rival product.[/list]

How to join files together (mpegs, avis, etc any files!)

Here's my little tutorial, (you can use this for any video or sound file, not just the vob's like mine says...)

--REPLACE THE VOB WITH AVI IN YOUR CASE!!--
    Tutorial:

    Steps:

    1. Open Finder
    2. Click On "Applications"
    3. Open "Utilities"
    4. Open "Terminal"
    5. In the Box that appears type "cat " and then drag {VOB1}
    6. then add {VOB2}
    7. put in ">"
    8. and then type the title that you want the new file to have.
    it will look like this:

    cat movie1.vob movie2.vob >> movie.vob
YOU CAN DO THIS WITH MORE THAN 2 FILES!!!

  14. sometimes when I join files the audio gets separated into several different tracks . I hate that. they were batched with the same preset.

why does the audio get split into separate audio tracks?
