  1. hi, I have:

    movie.avi (divx)
    movie.sub
    movie.idx

(note: above files were packaged together in one download)
Mplayer and VLC don't seem to play back the subtitles - I have tried all options in both programs - and the subtitles are toggled on.

However, I am not worried about this movie playing back on my computer with the subtitles --->

    I want to:
burn the .avi movie including the subtitles to CD for play back on my DivX compatible DVD player (JVC XV-N316).

    Firstly, can I achieve this?
Secondly, if so will converting the subtitles to .srt help (don't know if this will work tho). I could not find any Mac OSX subtitle rippers/converters.

If my subtitle solution involves conversion how do I convert .sub to .srt (or any other format needed) on a Mac? (Virtual PC probably an option but I can't be bothered installing it).

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Ask Major over in the ffmpegX forum. Until a few weeks ago I would have said you cannot convert your sub to srt on a Mac, but I think the latest versions of ffmpegX might be able to do something to help.

  3. ok so it appears that not many people have a solution to my question above and Mac OSX apps are way behind in the subtitle field.

So I decided to install Virtual PC 6 with windows 2000 pro afterall in order to convert my .sub file to a .srt file hoping that Mplayer would recognise it.

    1. Installed SubRip 1.17.1 (seems to be most popular subtitle PC app)

    2. Moved my .sub file to Windows desktop, fired up SubRip and converted it to .srt format with no problems (needs a bit of OCR though).

    3. Moved the new .srt file to my OSX desktop then re-tried the movie.avi with movie.srt and the subtitles worked perfectly in Mplayer.

ok so this is a subtitle solution for Mplayer as it seems to like .srt subtitle format. A hell of a process to set up just because there are no MacOSX subtitle converters - but at least now its good to go for future conversions and I get to laugh again at how bad Windows looks

    --------------

    External playback:

Unfortunatley, I still have no subtitle solution for external playback on my DivX compatible DVD player and I am begining to think that it is not possible to playback a separate subtitle file with the avi. I re-burnt my movie.avi and the new movie.srt file to CD (@ ISO 9660 LEVEL 1). The movie plays fine but again no subtitles

I am out of options here unless I can re-rip my movie to include the subtitles as part of the movie. I tried ffmpegX but it doesn't work.

Any suggestions on how to rip movies to include the subtitles in one file on Mac OSX would be greatly appreciated.

  4. If you did a search through google you would have found the Mac version of SUB2SRT. Well you can find it HERE

  5. Obviously I did do a search for OSX subtitle rippers in google and just about everywhere else my friend, what do u think you are the only one blessed with web search knowledge? read my post and you will see that I said their are no MacOSX subtitle converters - Sub2SRT does not work and to be quite honest unless you can bring some stable comments to the table don't waste your time.

do u have any useful comments to my problem? have you figured out how to watch a divx/xvid avi with subtitles on an external dvd divx compatible player?

I know you said you already tried ffmpegX to burn the subtitles into the divx, and it didn't work, but I would suggest you talk directly to Major (if you havent already) because I'm pretty sure ffmpegX can do this I've just never done it myself. I've seen Major teaching others how to do it though
