  1. Hello.. I just recently installed pioneer 108 and i'm very new to dvd burning. What media brand should I start off with? I was thinking of getting prodisk 4x 100 pk at supermedia store for the low price but I'm not too sure now. I will be backing up movies. TIA

Most likely TYG02 (Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R) as Pioneer drives tend to like -R better than +R, and MXLRG03 (Maxell 8x -R) seems kind of iffy of late in my experience.

  4. Go for TY. I have had bad luck with prodisc(mcc) and the ritek g05's. Spend the extra 5-8 bucks and get the best of the best.

I use the very cheap GSC003 that are sold as record, maxdata and maxmax 8x -R here in australia on my pioneer 108 and have never had a problem with over 250 burns. These discs are also claimed to be pioneer certified.

  6. All i have used are -r's
DataWrite Fuji 03 -- Both Printables and Grey Top
    Ritek Printables G04
Ritek ANV G05 -- Burn and test ok at 12x
DataSafe CMC MAG. AE1 -- First batch but burning at 12x and testing OK

Not true. Excellent with both -R/+R. This can be verified by reading testing reviews. This burner rocks with both formats, without a doubt.
My current "best" is Verbatim +R8x MCC 003. Best results I had. I did not have any problem with prodisc +R8x R03.
TY is also a good choice. I read almost all reviews and +R seems to give better burns. I only tried the -R8x (TY02) with good results.
This burner does a very good job with G05 (Ritek -R8x)

Humm, I think your problem is too much choice

    My 108 has burned over 500 Prodisc 8x +R's without a coaster.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

  11. I had luck with Prodisc 8x mcc at the start but then I started getting about 4 or 5 bad ones per 50 spindle. Not good. I thought that maybe I just had a bad batch. So, I ordered again from a different distributer and had about the same results.
With the ritek g05's the bad burn ratio was lower, but it still wasn't as good as the g04's were.
Thats when I tried TY and Verbatim. Both are excellent, but since I get TY discs cheaper, I stick with them.

  12. i've burned over 2,000 Sonic -R 4X (listed as 1X-2X) media code: MUST001 (reported as being crap, but...) with my 105 & now 108 and never had any failed burns or failed verifies and they always play perfectly on U.S. & Japanese PS2's, Panasonic E80H, JVC XV-N44, APEX 703A, APEX 1500, and of course all of my Macs with DVD drives (Matsushita, Pioneer DVR-105, Pioneer DVR-108) ~ and they are only $17.10 per 100 count spindle in cake-box [edit: now they are $18.00 because you can't use the 10% off coupon on them anymore boo, Shop4tech!] so, i'd say get yourself some cheap SONICS!

  14. Staples has 4x Maxells (TY) for $3.50 for 25, you have to bring them up for a price scan. Thats $15 per hundred. What a deal.

  19. Go for whatever will work on the target device - recording to a disc is only half the story. It's no good if you can't read it back on your standalone, for example...

The deal is well advertised over various forums right now. Here are the UPC codes for the 20 discs with jewel cases - Maxell 4x:

    DVD+R UPC: 025215625961
    DVD-R UPC: 025215626227

In store only, not offered on the website.

    Matted Prodisc 4X dvd-r; I've burned 50 at 8X on my 108 without a single problem.

Supermedia sold my next 50 cake as 8X. Their number is: DVD01X0180.
    Burned about 40 dvd's without a failure at 8X on the 108.

I've never had a failure with Ritek G04 burnt at 16X.

I use Pioneer for "-" DVDs and LitteOn for my "+" DVDs.

Sorry to say, but I don't know squat about "disc scans"

    I use Nero's verification function.

    Interesting note:
The 8X Prodisc burns at 12X (verified) but Nero and the 108 it take longer to
    burn at 8X!

Full DVD Shrunk files take about 7.5 minutes at 12X and 7 minutes or less at 8X.

Good luck with those 16X burns. I have never heard of anyone burning those at that speed who was happy with the burn quality.

Scans will show how many errors there are. Errors seem to increase over time on bad burns and can influence future readability. If it were my media I would download Kprobe and run some scans on your Liteon to see what kind of burn quality you are getting. Just a suggestion.

    Suggestion taken, THANKS!

I assume I use LiteOn+Kprobe on the 16X DVD burnt by the Pioneer.

Correct. Kprobe is designed to work on Liteon drives; let me know what model you have as some have minor problems. Run the scans at 4X for the best comparable read out. If you spend some time at CDFreaks they have a very good intro to this tool and how to read the output.

Glad to have been of help; thanks for the feedback. Some people are sensitive about scanning so I never know if I might offend someone suggesting it.

I burn ridata matte 8x up to 12x with my pionner 108.

    Recently I test 16X dvd r's, beall 16x dvd-r and prodisc 16x dvd+r work ok on my pioneer 108 and benq 1620.

  28. After many, many coasters with Both TDK 4x-r and 8x-r , I landed on Memorex 8x -r and they are working fine for me.
I don't see them on the list of approved media.
You may want to stick with those brands since I'm sure they did more testing, but these worked for me. Most of my work has been DVD backups using both DVDCopy Express and DVD Cloner II

I've used RITEK (G04 & G05) and PRINCO (PRINCO) on my 104, 106 & 107 without any hassles, so I would assume that the same would ring true for the 108.
    If in doubt, Google it.
