  1. Well that interview totally blew chunks...

    They are looking for a:
    Citrix guru
    Cisco guru
    Exchange 2000 guru
    SQL 2000 guru
    Windows 2003 guru
    Linux guru
    Enterprise backup guru

All in one person, Yeah RIGHT....Then I asked how many employees they currenty have...6....I thought to myself, no wonder you're looking for a pipe dream employee...Even if they could find someone that is a guru in all that stuff, do you honestly think that person is going to work for such a small company? The president of the company had his kids play pen in the conference room BTW, the conference table was an old dinning table.

Next time find out what they're looking for. Look at what it's going for elsewhere, then work from there as far as where they're willing to compromise. Something tells me they wouldn't want to pay nearly what a person with those credentials is worth.

I could take care of the Exchange and Windows 2003 (Pretty sure that's the server version because I haven't heard of any others). I could take stab at Cisco, but I'd probably kill it. I stabbed at Linux and killed it for someone previously. That's what you get when you install a program not made for the type of system. Got to used to XP.

2003 is a server only OS, XP is 2002 (or 2004 and 2005 for MCE). What ever happened to simplicity? Does a business REALLY need all of this, or can some of these functions be integrated?

They do if they are a 6 person company....actually 4 if you take away the sales manger and the president, who interviewed me. I just started my own consulting biz, so I'de be asking for the samething if I was looking to hire another employee.

When I told them I had some experience with veritas, the sales manger started asking all these questions about size of backup and the size of servers. I told him the company I worked for had a whole department with at least 20 ppl that were in charge of corp backups...My experience was with my 6 servers. and then they did the backup of my storage server. Then he asked questions about my Exchange experience (I 5.5 but they wanted 2000) I told him it was limited to 100 accounts...he started looking, you know that way, like that's it? Then I reiterated that the company I worked for had a whole DATA CENTER devoted for exchange with over 300,000 users and TEAMS that managed them...

I could go on....but soon as I got there and looked around, I knew what they were going to want...and no one I know would work for them based on apperance and size....

Now watch them offer me a job for 25K a year

I meant does a company that size truly need to utilize all of those technologies to be successful?

I gotcha, I was thinking for their business use. I can see the need for a consulting firm. I'm a bit light on sleep lately and the oxygen valve to my brain has developed a slow leak.

The kids playing in the conference room would be enoug of a turn off for me. If they wanted a guru for all these things, couldn't you have lied? I mean I'm sure your capable of figuring it out quickly enough the stuff you don't know so why not if you think you can do it.

If I were in that situation and they did that to me I'd probably find another line of work, like the next day. I'd be looking for jobs as a plumber/electrician/HVAC technician/auto mechanic, etc.
