  1. I set MMC up to automatically record the season premiere of '24' and when I went to look there was a message on the screen saying that the content was protected and recording was not allowed!

This really sucks, I like to record shows, burn them to DVD-RW and watch them later.

Has anyone experienced this? Are there any ways around this?

    Thanks,
    Greg

  2. I got it ok. What kind of service do you have?

  3. Are you running 9.02?

    I'm using an ATI AIW 8500 card on a Win2K SP3 machine

I have a local Cincinnati Time Warner Cable.

That's weird that you were able to get it, I would have thought that if it was blocked, it would have been for everyone. Maybe if the cable company has the ability to embed the 'no recording' signal then it is blocked otherwise it is not blocked.

I'm hoping that someone knows a way to get around this like I've found for getting around macrovision.

    Thanks,
    Greg

I have this happen every so often on a local PBS station using MMC 8.x via a Comcast cable box.

I'm wondering if some technician switched on the record block. The record block will become common later this year.

This is analog capture, not digital TV.

But the MMC software refuses to to record the material. I'm thinking there must be some kind if analog record block signal in the vertical interval data fields that the MMC software detects. It seems to happen only on some "special" PBS programming for me.

The "problem" is the movie/tv industry and its greed.
MANY MANY capture cards, DVD recorders, PVRs, and VCRs do this now.
Don't like it? Buy a TBC.

  12. I'm just hoping that someone comes out with a hack, I don't want to steal the tv shows, I just want them to be portable! All I want to do is be able to record the shows to DVD+RW so I can watch them whenever and wherever I choose. What's the use of having a PVR/DVR if you can't record the shows!

I'm in the process of building a MediaPC using MMC and this 'anti-recording' garbage isn't making it easy.

Timebase Corrector. It goes between the source and the recorder/capture card. It strips all timing including macrovision and other copy protection. Then it provides its own precise timing. Works wonders for tape captures and other marginal sources too 8)

lordsmurf any way you look at it still a ATI problem for even support CGMS-A in the first place just becuase HBO and few other say so it not an official law in tell July 2005 so there for what ATI and MS XPMCE is doing should be illegal.
I do agree 100% on this "The "problem" is the movie/tv industry and its greed." and going get 100x woste after July 2005.
I don't know if TBC going even help get a round the CGMS-A problem, if you qll recall rigth the TBC gear towords macrovision problem so there are NO GUARANTEE if that going even to work with CGMS-A anti-copy algorithm.

Yes the problem comes in the ATI tuner which inhibits recording at all. This is frustrating because you have no idea this will happen when you set the timer to record.

I think the ATI issue must be a bug (either ATI or the TV station) because this is not supposed to be happening yet.

A TBC will not help. This all happens in the tuner.

Such things have been found off and on for 15 years now. I remember the VCR back in the early 90s thinking certain channels had Macrovision. Nothing new, not even close.
