How long was the video, and what bitrate did the encoder use? You might see better results using the 2-pass VBR encoding in TMPGENC or CCE, then import that into Sonic.

A problem i ran into while encoding in TMPGENC: should it be in mpg1 or mpg2? And, no matter what interlacing option i pick, the final product always shows those nasty horizontal lines.

You will not see them when you watch it on a TV. For computer playback you need to use software specifically designed for playing DVD on a computer such as PowerDVD to make it look normal.
