  1. Hi there,

I have been trying to capture the audio from an AVI file using VirtualDub 1.6.0. Although I can play back the video in Real/WM player it gives me a compressor error when I use VirtualDub. The error I get is:

'No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format'

    Any help? Cheers

This means that you are missing the audio codec for playback, which is strange if you captured the video on the same PC. Use AVICODEC or similar to tell you which audio codec it uses.

  3. Hi,

Sorry, forgot to mention. I used AVIcodec to determine the video and audio codecs and have downloaded them both. Also, I didnt capture the video on my computer. Its a video file that I downloaded.

  6. Open the avi in vdubmod.
    Click Streams, stream list.
    Select the audio.
    Click Save WAV.

Don't forget to right-click on the audio and go to Full Processing before your click "Save WAV", because otherwise it just adds a WAV header to the current file, instead of converting it to a true WAV file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I seem to recall you (correctly) correcting me earlier in the week
    If in doubt, Google it.

  11. Hi,

Ive used VirtualDub Mod and it works when I dont choose 'full processing mode'. Its only when I choose 'full processing mode' that it gives me the same error as I had in the beginning.

Unfortunately the resulting file, when saved without full processing mode, wont work in TMPGenc Xpress. What is 'full processing mode' anyway? Also, is there any reason why it work work when this is used? Cheers

  12. Full Processing Mode means that VirtualDub will try and decode the audio (for which it has to use the decoding part of the codec). If instead you use Direct Stream Copy VirtualDub will not try and do anything to the audio stream.

I would recommend using GoldWave to decode the audio from avi's if they are giving you problems - just open up the avi in GoldWave and then save as a wav. It seems to work on pretty much everything (including AC3 etc..)

Alternatively (and this is not much different) use VirtualDub in Direct Stream Copy mode to separate the audio stream (save it as a wav, although it will not really be a PCM wav file) and then open that wav in an audio editor (e.g. GoldWave, Audacity, SoundForge, CoolEdit etc...)

What does gSpot actually say about the codecs in use in your file? The approach to use to decode it to wav manually really depends on what sort of codec is used.

    cheers,
    theDruid.
