  1. Sorry if this an old topic. What apps to use? Im looking for something to give "watchable" quality not necessarily archivable.

I use Nero Vision Express or PowerProducer, but these always take nearly twice as long as the length of the movie, about three or four hours on average. Quality can be really good though I pick the right settings.

I would also like to know if there is a faster way.

There are DVD players that play those file types now. BUrning a data disc CD or DVD then playing on a player that excepts that type is much faster.

Sometimes I just use the TV out on my computer if I don't want to wait for the conversion.

A faster way to convert would be cool.

Only I can think of is upgrading my proc I only have a Athlon XP 2500+, but I really like my motherboard I told myself I am not going to buy a faster proc unless it's 64bit.

Try TheFilmMachine for XVID,DIVX. It's easy to use and freeware. Speed is more dependent on your CPU and the encoder you use. TFM can use CCE encoder (Not free) which is fairly fast and very good quality.

Also, check the 'Guides' to the left for more conversion programs.

For just encoding, Mainconcept encoder is faster, but may have a few more steps to go through.

  4. The fastest I have found so far was Winavi. It converted a 1:50 movie in under an hour on a Celeron 2.4 GHZ w/ 512MB Ram. SVCD2DVD also did it in less than realtime w/ a little better quality.

I've been using VSO DivxtoDVD. Right now it is a free beta, but will probably become a pay for use product eventually. You are limited in your options. You can basically pick format (Pal or NTSC) and Aspect Ratio (4:3 or 16:9) Other than that it automatically picks format for audio and the video is VBR. However it does it very fast. Usually realtime or a bit faster and it automatically creates chapters every 5 minutes. I think it is very good for someone like me who is just starting out with making DVDs... or if your just really lazy. . Any way, it's worth a shot. You can find it in the Tools section under All-in-one DVD converters.

  7. DVDSANTA.
It does subs also. At least according to this post
"Fabulous program if you want burned in subtitles. Make sure its a srt file, the same name as the movie and in the same folder. DVDSanta will automatically make a file with the subtitles.
Very useful as well if you have a movie split over two avi files. Drag and drop and press a button and finished. It even keeps 5.1 surround sound intact. Not really fast but the quality is very good if not excellent. "

  8. Please! There's no way I can recommend DVDSanta, sorry. IMHO it's buggy, and tediously slow, compared to the other pay (and some of the free) apps.
The lazy easy way is VSO Divx to dvd, which actually does a decent job, compared to the next best lazy app, Nerovision Express.
If you haven't got the time, nor the money, to invest in really good standalone apps, VSO stands above the crowd.

Guys, trust me on this one. VSO Software's DivxToDVD . Free, good, and smoking fast. No bells and whistles, but quick.
