    In the instructions for the official firmware update for the above writer it says you should uninstall all packetwriting software. Does this mean I should uninstall nero/dvd decrypter etc?

    No, packet writing apps like Nero's InCD or RecordNow' DLA...
    These apps. can use rewritable DVD's like a large floppy disc but often screw up other burning functions...
