  1. I think I'm ready to give up...

Does anyone have any experience with The FilmMachine?

Now really - after wasting two weeks on one "one click wonder" app, you're ready to throw yourself into the arms of the next? What's so appaling with reading some guides, learning something new along the way?

I can understand your frustration. This is not the easiest hobby to get started in. I started in video using dvd2svcd to create svcd.s with tmpgenc. That app has now been upgraded so you can use quenc (free) for the encoder and it will also create dvds.

After using dvd2svcd for awhile I finally decided I wanted more controll on what I was doing. So off to the guides section I went. After reading many guides and a lot of trial and error I started catching on. Now I much prefer encoding and authoring my material on my own rather than let a single or bundled app do it for me.

That being said if you really want to use a all in on app then I would suggest dvd2svcd. If you follow a guide to set it up it will pretty much do everything you want.

When you are ready to try encoding without an all in one I would suggest looking for a guide by jimmalenko as his guides are very newbie friendly.

Good luck and don't give up!

  4. OK, I am going to give this one more try...

After doing some more research I think (obviously a newbe thought) the problem lies in the AVI2WAV limitation. According to http://www.vmesquita.com/forum/index.php?topic=1054.0 it looks as though the limit is 2GB and that may just explain why the small file worked and the larger did not.

I think that I will attempt to split the avi files into smaller chunks and try it again. I guess I wil have to then use DVDShrink to get the files sized for on DVD (just a guess at this time).

However, and this is a big however...maybe I should just try to do each step separatly using the avi files I already have. If I do this, is it safe to say that the process would be:
    1. Encode the avi to mpg2 (I was thinking TmpgEnc)
    2. Demultiplex the file (again TmpgEnc)
    3. Author the files (DVDAuthor or DVDAuthorgui)
    4. Shrink if necessary (DVDshrink)
    4. Burn (DVDdecryptor)

If I go the separate route, do I have a greater chance at synch problems with the audio/video? Any other suggestions?[/url]

No, since you're encoding the audio and video together - sync issues might occur if you separate the audio from video before encoding. However, at times you have to do this, as some AVIs have audio in a format that confuses/wont work at all with TMPGEnc.
In the latter case, load AVI in Goldwave and save wav, then use wav as audio source for TMPGEnc. Sync problems aren't really that common, if you have a good source AVI.
