what will a panasonic e50 dvd recorder set-top capture at when I connnect my analogue Sony TR415e camcorder please
It is PAL (I live in UK) the top mode is XP and gets an hour per DVD-R
Will this if I record from my analogue camcorder be at the DVD res PAL of 720 x 576?
In the Sony manual for my analog camcorder it says: total Pixels 320,000 pixels,Effective Sensor Resolution 290,000 pixels. what does this mean re the recording to the DVD recorder?
is this the best way? rather than using a WinTV PCI Go card?
cheers

At an hour per DVD disk it will be full resolution (720 x 576) at a bitrate of around 8500 - 9000 kbs. In other words, the best quality you can get. Too good for your camcorder footage, you could go down to 2 hours per disk and not notice any degradation. 720 x 576 pixels is 414,720 so your camcorder isn't capable of achieving this so the extra resolution is wasted.
If you just want a straight copy of the video on your camcorder put onto DVD a standalone is the way to go. The downside will be that you can't do much in the way of editing. If you want to start getting clever then capturing to your computer is what you want to be doing. -
So its pointless me going for the XP mode 1hr per DVD-R (4.37Gb ?) If you say that 2hr per DVD will do I wil go for this, Im afraid I dont have a clue, so what res does my SOny Analog capture at then please?
I do want to edit on my PC after this, but I thought I could just rip the VOBs after this can I not?
Is this the best way to go? any help is gratefully recieved for my problem
cheers

I disagree, the resolution doesn't change with 1 hr vs 2hr setting on the panasonic DVD recorder but the compression does, so you will get better quality at the 1hr setting.
Its your choice whether the disc cost is worth it for your camcorder material.
If your goal is to edit on the computer, I would capture to the computer in DV format, edit the matrerial in DV and then author the DVD. The results will be superior to editing Mpeg2. -
There is some disagreement about whether it is a "waste" to capture 8mm or VHS at full D1 resolution. Because of the low cost of DVD media, I always capture my camcorder footage at XP with my DVD recorder. There is a noticeable difference in detail when you capture 8mm or VHS at half D1... the picture is slightly softer. Also, the one hour high bitrate capture of the XP setting ensures virtually no encoding macroblocks and other MPEG2 artifacts caused by image movement (which is almost constant with hand held camcorder footage). You can perform simple edits of MPEG2 video captured with DVD recorder and author a finished DVD with no quality loss using software like Womble MPEG Video Wizard and TMPGEnc DVD Author.
With Hi8, S-VHS; and even MiniDV and Digital8 (if you are using the analog video outputs) you definitely want to capture at full D1. -
Thanks for that, I'm not bothered about the cost of disks as I only will have about 5 hours worth to do.
edDV I cant capture straight to DV on my computer as I only have a WinTV GO! TV card, this is why I was wondering if a DVD recorder would be a better option.
Once I have made a DVD want s the best way then to get it into a editor such as premiere elemnts or pinnacle studio 9?
is it just to RIP the VOBs off the DVD using DVD decrypter or something?
thanks so mucg for your comments these videos are vry important to me.
cheers
