  1. I'm trying to capture video from my Sony PC-330 DV camcorder onto a Windows XP SP2 system. Rather suddenly, capture stopped working in a number of programs, including Pinnacle Studio and Adobe Premiere Elements. I tried WinDV and Microsoft's Movie Maker as well, and neither worked.

In Adobe Premiere Elements, I get a message that says, "Can't activate recorder. Try resetting camera." I tried that as well, but to no avail.

I downloaded the trial of Scenalyzer, and that actually worked. I was able to capture from the camcorder, but the quality of the capture was poor (lots of dropped frames and noise in the capture). Since Scenalyzer worked, I'm assuming the problem is not the firewire card or cord and is instead a software conflict. But I'm stumped as to what it might be.

The only significant change I made to my system between the time capture worked and when it didn't was installing DirectX 9.0c. Unfortunately, this cannot be uninstalled and my system restore points prior to that do not seem to work.

I can't find anything on Microsoft's site about DirectX 9.0c conflicts. I've also heard that a faulty CODEC could be to blame, but I'm not sure what I need to do to test that theory. Any ideas???

Are your IEEE-1394 inputs on the mother board or a PCI card? Either way, I would first go to device manager under IEEE-1394 Bus host controller and remove all drivers. Then reboot and let XP reinstall everthing.

If the input is on a PCI card, try switching slots and look for new drivers at the mfgr site.

  3. I am having the same problem. Google found a post that said it has to do with some audio filter. I don't have that filter so I can't tell.

I have a TI based PCI card.

  5. Nope. No OS changes, not even a patch. I can remember everything in b/w (worked a month ago). But the installation includes things such as Morgan Stream Switcher, TMPGEnc and maybe Windows Movie Maker (uninstalled later).

And have premiere has be resintalled a few days ago.

  6. What audio filter did the Google post mention? I've got my problem narrowed down to a CODEC problem, but unfortunately I can't figure out which one.

Also, if anyone knows how to completely delete all CODECS in Windows XP SP2, please let me know. I tried manually removing them from Control Panel / System / Device Manager, but they don't actually get deleted under SP2.

    It is sth like TFM.

It is a CODEC problem. I uninstalled media codec pack and the capture is now working. Since it is a pack, I can't identify the exact offending codec.

Best thing to do is avoid those codec packs altogether. Only install codecs individually as you need them.

True. I don't recall installing the codec pack but somehow it was installed. Still, I don't quite understand how it could mess up capture in Premiere as it was working in other softwares.

  13. Hi all,

Had the same problem with Premier Pro not able to activate recorder..

Finally found the problem... Morgan Stream Switcher !!! I used MMComp and disabled the morgan active X filter (C:\WINDOWS\system32\MMSwitch.ax) and all is fine!!

I think I can probably live without a stream switcher for the moment!!

    Hope this helps

  14. What is MMComp?

Is there any alternative to MSS?

Could also be something like this MS Knowledge Base article:-

"Performance of 1394 devices may decrease after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2."

Dxman is another codec removal tool, will unregister them from the registry.

  17. I'm having similar trouble with Adobe Premiere Pro. One day I just started getting this error message.

The weird thing... Windows Movie Maker still works.

    Any suggestions?

Note... I'm trying to capture from a Panasonic AG-DV1000 Digital Video Cassette Recorder. (which has always worked in the past)

I've also made sure I have proper Administrative rights, as this is usually an issue in my office.

follow those instructions and bam you are flying.

  19. I'm having this exact issue and the link posted just prior to this is not valid on Adobe's forum any more, nor is searching on Adobe's site for "Brian Charles"

    Anyone remember the fix?
