  1. How can I copy the MPEG files in the MPEG2 directory on a SVCD?

I can play the SVCD fine and browse it in Win2K ok. But whenever I try to copy the files to my hard drive, it gives me error. I understand that the MPEG2 streams are saved as tracks on SVCD, that might be the problem ...

Any way, please let me know how to extract the MPEG2 files if you know.

    Thank you very much!

  3. You can play mpeg files in MPEG2 dir. on SVCD but cannot copy, humm so strange. How do you copy those files anyway? Can you play those files in window media player? I think that you can save file with window media player but i'm not sure if it will work with your files.

  4. That is wierd... What kind of error are you getting?

I often convert SVCD to VCD using the following process in Windows 98 SE:

    - Copy MPEG from the SVCD using Windows Explorer
    - Use DVD2AVI to prepare the file for conversion
    - Convert the *.d2v file using TMPGEnc

The first step is to copy the file from the CD and it works fine for me. Again, what error do you receive?

    Thanks,

  5. Well, it seems that I can only see those mpeg files lie in the directory. Accessing them (ie copying, playing with windows media player, etc) all fails. If you have converted to VCD before, how did you do that?

I suspect this is a CD format issue, maybe multi-track or whatever?

    Any tips are appreciated!

  6. Oh forgot to mention that I can only play it using a software SVCD player, WinDVD in my case. Playing mpeg files directly doesn't work.

  7. If you can play the file from a software DVD player, you surely can access the files to copy them -- therefore it is not a CD-ROM issues.

A crazy question... Do you have enough hard drive space on the drive you are trying to copy to??? An SVCD file can be up to ~820 MB's on an 80 minute CD-R!!! What message do you get when you try to copy the file?

Also, you will not be able to play SVCD using WiMP (Windows Media Player) with special codecs. Take a look at http://www.doom9.net/ for a ZIP file called FREEDVD... This will allow you to play MPEG2 files using media player.

    Good Luck!

De-MUX and re-MUX in TMPGEnc. That will make the MPEG2 file playable in WMP. I tried the FREEDVD drivers avilable at doom9 (and some others available here) and still couldn't play SVCD without doing the MUX thing. I could, however, play all normal MPEG2 files on a work computer, where before I could not. I heard that there are couple of bytes that can be changed directly in the SVCD file that will make the SVCD stream readable by WMP. Search vcdhelp for a site that tells you what to change and how to do it.

  9. Do you have a friend with window 98? try to browse and copy those files in win98, maybe it's about w2k issue. BTW (S)VCD tracks are different from audio tracks so that's not an issue at all. I copy both mpeg2 and mpeg1( dat file) all the time.

  10. MPEG2 files on a vcd are stored in a slightly different format (it's very similar to Audio CD) than windows is used too, there's a description in isobuster about what's different. There are numerous ways to do this right.

Make an image file of the SVCD with cloneCD, then open this in isobuster or VCDGear and extract the MPEG.

Get VCDEasy, make a bin/cue file using the CDRDAO tools, then use the VCD tools to disasemble the BIN, this will extract the MPEG.

Alternatively if you just want to copy the SVCD use CloneCD to do a 1 for 1 copy.

  11. Shabubu,

Thank you very much! Your method works!

  12. Eh, figured out a faster way (less steps)

You can also skip the clonecd step, and just use isobuster to extract the .mpg file (select it from the dir tree, right click and extract)...then you can demux/remux using tmpegenc...

    Cheers,

Could anyone point me to the FreeDVD files at Doom9 that Bewley mentions? I searched all over and couldn't locate them. Thanks

  15. Go to http://www.doom9.org/ and look under the "Old News" section for 2001.

You will see it in the 11/26 update.

    Good Luck!
