Are there any references to "Thumb-rules for the Frames Per Second" (ranging between say, 5 to 30) to be set during video capture with a software like VirtualDub? What are the variables like "speed of movement of the objects in the video" or "condition of light - natural or artificial- in the video" on which the frame-rate depends? If values of these two variables are listed in a two-way table on the X and Y axes what would be the recommended frame rates which should be used? I read in some references that 25 fps is a good speed for qyality videos.
I think my Pentium III PC with an IDE controller may be too limited to reach frame rates of 25 or higher. VirtualDub itself haS FLASHED ERROR MESSAGES ASKING ME TO LOWER THE FRAME RATE EVEN WHEN I HAD SET IT AT ONLY 20FPS. Currently, I am compelled to keep it at 15 fps with an ATI AIW-128 card. Since I need to reach an fps of 25 to get good quality videos, I am thinking of migrating to Pentium IV and/or SVCD Controller and/or an ATI Radeon 8500 Video capture card.

Considering the costs involved, which of the three upgrades: 1) Pentium III to Pentium IV, 2) ATI AIW-128 to ATI Radeon 8500 DDR and 3) IDE to SCSI Controller is likely to enable me to achieve an FPS rate closer to 25?

  2. I have a PIII, with an IDE ATA/100 hard drive, and and ATI AIW 128, and can capture at 29.97 fps 720x480 without any problem. Something is wrong with your setup, not your equipment.

More importantly, framerate is tied to video system, not video quality (strictly speaking, anyway). 24fps is film, 23.976 is NTSC film, 29.97 is NTSC broadcast, and 25 fps is PAL.
