First of all, I'm assuming the "XPress" doesn't mean I bough a higher version number with less features, does it?

    Ok.

    1:27:00 DV 720x468 Video
    224 kbps MP2 Audio

Putting on a standard DVD yields a bitrate estimate of:

    6781kbps

    So...
I launch the encoder, choose VBR and when I input that number per the instructions on the Calc page... it says it's going to be 105% or something.

Will the estimate be wrong? Is the calculator wrong?
Does the calculator account for a modest menu?

I put in 6700 to be safe. 20 hours remaining.

According to vcdhelp bitrate calculator your bitrate should be 6058,looks like you will go over, make sure tmpg says its 100% and double check your calculation.

    You're spot on, Tolwyn

What you'll find is that TMPGEnc classes a DVD's capacity as 4200MB, even though you can go pretty close to 4482MB in reality. 6700kbps video and 224kbps audio (in theory) will give you a 4412MB output, which will be fine.

    1hr 27min, not 1hr37min john
    If in doubt, Google it.

My mistake, maybe i need glasses ,one thing is you have to account for is some overhead which is usually 100-200 mb depending on how many tracks you are using.

Nah, shit happens mate. We can't be right ALL of the time

    @Tolwyn:
The calculator does not account for menus. It literally works out the bitrate to absorb right down the the last MB of disc space, so generally I'd subtract 50-100 from the bitrate the calculator like you have. This should give you plenty of space for a modest menu and will keep you off the very outer edges of the disc also. You could always enter a custom output size in the bitrate calculator too - such as 4300MB or whatever.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Cool. Thank you very much. Looks like it's going to be close. I'm still encoding, believe it or not... 18 hours total. Good grief!

I can always do some minute cut editing if I have to to get it to fit.
