Can anyone suggest why VD drops frames (I know all about the async audio) but why VD drops frames over 10000 frames and AVI_IO does not?
The problem I have with AVI_IO is that it doesnt support custom resolutions and is buggy as hell

radial,
actuall, avi_io does support other resolutions, but it sort of depends on your
capture driver (WDM vs VFW)
I have the ATI Rage Fury card, and being that this card support the WDB only
drivers, and it was fine, all except for the 352x480!! didn't support it!
How come? Don't know! But, I did try and use the VFW Wrapper, although
that worked for me, it had a color limit (8 or 16 colors) very bad quality!
I WANTED 352x480!! So, in short, I was able to use a VWF driver, being that
I had the ATI-TV Wonder (ATW) card, I installed it, and now have ALL the res.
I want to use.
You didn't say what you video card you have and the capture card type, and
maybe even the windows operating system matters as well??
I have windows 98. Personally, I don't think that it's the
windows operating system that really matters, but rather
which capture driver you're using, (WDM vs VFW)
My captures are working flowless, with minimum frame drops at 352x480.
How are you changing the resolution?
Can you change res. in VD??
Later!..., but don't give up! I didn't!

I have the same problem i gave up on vd a long time ago for capturing i use avi_io to capture i still drop frames but only 1 or 2 for a 2 hour movie which is a lot better than hundreds as its not my system i just put it down to vd as i dont drop frames in any other programe not even the crap that came with my capture card even my USB capture device drops frames on vd in the hundreds but not on anything else either i still use virtualdub though.I capture with avi_io then use vd for the rest as it is quite a good programe for converting to divx and cleaning up avis for encoding to vcd

Hi,
I have a PCTV USB and a notebook AMD k6-2 450Mhz. I can't capture AVI's without drop many frames (a lot).
I alredy use many programs like virtualdub, iuvcr, freevcr, avi_io, etc...
The capture program than can best result is Freevcr, but have other problem, audio is not good. My capture card dont have line-in, only have MIC to input audio. will be this the problem?
At AVI_IO have another problem, dont let me choose video compression, only "no compression" and I have many codec's instaled!
Anybody help?
Tanks

Dropped frames are mainly coust by the HDD.
Make sure that the harddisk, cable and controller has the same UDMA/ATA indication.
also turn the DMA option within the device manager for the HDD on to make sure that the hdd uses the maximum buffers to proceed with datatransfer.
with video editing there is a lot of datatransfer going on.
therefor you have to be sure that the hdd has the maximum resources. -
arp,
There are other things you can try - some are:
A - new USB card(s) (if you're pc has PCI slots? or RU using a notebook?)
B - buy a cheaper 20g HD and test with it.
C - try another capture card or usb capture unit.
We don't know what's your:
1 - CPU type
2 - speed
3 - HD size
4 - How old (you using a spare 6gig?
5 - total RAM (types matter, but I'm not expert in this)
6 - Video card (does help here - it does!)
7 - source you're trying to cap - (vhs, tv, cable, sat, dvd, etc)
. . .would help more, if you state these items here!!
Also, try and not be too afraid of experiments. I do it all the time.
All the time.
(3)(4) - if you have those old style harddrive size like, 3g or 6g, it could
be using those old chipsets, and throughput may never be satisfied.
For AVI captures, that is.
(5) - if you have very little ram, there may not be enough for all the
video processing, and will end up eating your SWAP drive (in addition to
your old/slow HD)
(6) - video card is also important! I know! From experince, when I used
my ATI Rage 128 video card - (16MB pci version) and captured with my
ATI-TV Wonder pci card, I'd drop MANY frames, even at 352x240, or
352x480. BUT, when I yanked out my Rage 128, and replaced it with my
ATI Rage Fury Pro (agp) card, I had no more tons of frame drops. I only
get like maybe, 7 frames an hour, at 352x480. I could probably tweak
this, but it doesn't harm my final encodes and audio in the least.
So, I leave it alone! I haven't tried it at 704x480 cause I dont' use it.
So, I don't know what kind of frame drops I would get at that res.
So, video cards do make a difference her also - could help some.
(7) - and finally, it also depends on the source and quality of it too.
Well, if you have a pc, then the above may help, else if you have
a notebook, I'm not sure I did much for ya.
I have an Athlon T-BRD 900mhz w/ pc133 128mb ram
And I use my ATI-TV Wonder card for captures these days, so far, but you
never know what card I may have in my system for testing or what-not.
I love tinkering around with my capturing process. Yipee!

Things to check in virtaldub..
Disk IO, play with this till your happy
Format, set to YUY2
Settings, lock audio to vid stream and framerate
Capture drives, there set up
Hide on capture ON
Compression, huffyuv or MJPEG
Also ensure that Hide on capture is on and that your using the internal capture mode... not the compatability one. -
Shabubu,
I will try your advices.
What is (function?) "Disk IO" and "Internal capture"?
Does AVI_IO is better than Virtualdub to capture or not?
To vhelp,
My equipment:
Compaq presario laptop (2 years)
Amd k6-2 450Mhz
HD 6GB (DMA active)
192 Mb Ram
8 MB video
One USB port
Source cap: vhs, TV, Camcorder 8mm
Resolution cap: 352x288 (pal). Is max of my capture card Pinnacle PCTV USB.
Thanks

I found the same problem with VDub and changed over to AVI-IO. At the moment I'm using a Pinnacle PCTV card for capturing with AVI-IO, PICvideo and RGB24 settings. VHS capture are at 704 x 288 (PAL) and DVD captures are 704 x 576. All AVI's are resized to 480 x 576 using VDub and frameserved to TMPGenc with the standard SVCD template. The resulting disks are a pleasure to watch.
BTW, I just sent Markus my new email address and within an hour I had the latest update of AVI_IO sent to me.
Thats what I call service!

People, the reason that VirtualDub drops frames is because it's video buffer is at default of 10. AVI_IO has a default video buffer of 50 (as you can see on the status bar when capturing). You can change the video buffer in VD also thru the Capture->Settings menu in the Advanced field. Then VirtualDub will work just the same as AVI_IO if not better. Anyways, VirtualDub is free and AVI_IO. If you find VirtualDub Recorder by Joe Redfish, it's an all in one solution with a built in timer
