  1. I converted the .avi file using virtual dub and TMPGenc (VCD NTSC template) into .mpeg.

However when i try to burn it nero gives me this error:
-stream encoding which is invalid for a [Super]Video CD

and it give me option to ignore this messege or rencode it. Ignoring makes sound not synchronized with video. Rencoding takes too long. I want to put several movies converting to .mpg at night in TMPGenc.

    Virtual Dub File Information:
    352x240, 29.97fps (33367us)
    average bit rate: 1148 kbps(141KB/s)
    Audio:
44KHz stereo, 224 Kbps layer II

Can some1 tell me wat am i doing wrong?
    ty.

Have you tried demuxing the audio out in Virtualdub to a WAV, then using this audio file and the video to input to TMPGEnc encoder? That is usually the recommendation for preventing sync problems.

  4. Isnt Svcd Mpg2? Not mpg1?That maybe what is wrong your making/Ecoding with TMpgenc a "VCD" not a SVCD.

I believe you have a bit rate problem. VCD must use a CBR (constant bit rate) on the video of 1150, not 1148. Yes, it's just off enough to make a difference. I am really puzzled as to why you are using both VirtualDub AND TMPGenc as you can use TMPGenc to convert to MPEG-1. In fact, I would recommend you let TMPGenc convert the video and get VirtualDub out of the equation.

The Nero error is trying to tell you that something is wrong with the way you encoded the video. You can try and demux/remux using TMPGenc's VCD template and that might fix the problem, but you really do need to get the bit rate right and I would recommend you use only TMPGenc for conversion.

  6. thnx. Ill try to use just TMPenc. but i thought i have to use VirtuaDub when the adio is not CBR.
And the problem seems to be not with the audio but with the video as u said the video bit rate has to be 1150, not 1148. And wat is demux/remux and how do i do it? ill try using TMPenc only for now.

  7. The maximum videobitrate allowed by the VCD spec is 1151929.1 bits/s and you can use whatever videobitrate you want as long as it's not higher than 1151929.1 bits/s.

I could be wrong, but I thought VCD was 1150kbps CBR, and any bitrate under or over was an XVCD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

The maximum videobitrate of 1151929.1 bits/s is only the maximum videobitrate allowed by the VCD spec for mpeg tracks. The maximum videobitrate allowed by the VCD spec for segment play items is 1377600 bits/s, but this maximum videobitrate depends on the bitrate used by the mpeg audio stream.

Seems like you've encoded to VCD, but trying to author as SVCD? No matter, tell Nero to shut the f*ck up, and go ahead and author it as best as it can, if possible, as it will surely play. The MPEG should work fine. However, I recommend authoring (S)VCD with VCDEasy.

So should you use MPG2 or MPG when making a SVCD?

I had a similar problem with NERO. I followed the instructions for making a VCD with TMPGenc and Virtual Dub, then ended up with a MPG file. I brought it into Nero, configured my menu, and burned to CD. When I put it in two separate DVD players, the menu would come up but that's it. Can't get it to play. I checked on a PC, and by digging I found the video file and got it to play there.

Why can't I play the disc past the menu in a standard DVD player?

Today I read some Nero help files, but didn't see what I did wrong. Right now I'm burning it as a SVCD to see if that makes any difference. I got the error message at the beginning about the MPG being the wrong format, but I'm proceeding anyway.

    SVCD:MPEG-2,480x480(576 PAL)
Mixed format:If you try the CD on a PC it might play,if you try on DVD player it won't.

I could simply say "Don't ever use Nero for other purposes than writing your preformatted data to disc" but I'll elaborate: Nero doesn't make fully compliant VCD, it's as simple as that. Specially when you use it to create a menu - I almost gave this business up altogether, as I in my first attempts took the same route, ending up with non playing VCDs. Then I saw The Light, found VCDEasy, and have never experienced any troubles creating VCD/SVCD. So, if you insist on using Nero, don't use menus but you seriously should get a copy of last free version of VCDEasy, and use that to author your (S)VCD.

    Well, this is somewhat embarassing.

After giving up on Nero, I took my MPG to Sonic MyDVD and made a VCD there. Same result.

Then I realized that I couldn't just hit "enter" or "play" from the menu. I had to punch in chapter number 1 on the keypad, then hit enter. Now both VCDs work.

Stupid, but I've been working with DVD for so long I had forgotten how the interface worked on VCDs.

Just to clarify, SVCD requires MPG2 files, right?
