hi there.
yeah, i was about to post a new thread on this topic.
i got several NTSC 352x288 mpeg vids (30min to 2hrs long) and need to convert them to PAL, without losing any or much quality.
all my other 352x288 mpeg vids are PAL and play nicely in media player on my pc, and the image plays back on the whole media player screen, but playing the ntsc vids they are like compressed height wise so they look more like wide screen image in media player, with a black bar across the top and bottom of the media player screen and it looks pretty crappy.
can anyone suggest a quick and easy way to convert it.
i got tmpge 3.0 and mainconcept encoders, but they dont seem to be able to do it, and will re-encode the file again even if it can convert them.
any help appreciated.....GLEN -
you will need to convert the file again. The best is to see if there is a Hack for you DVD player. Going from Pal to NTSC or the other way is not easy. The way I do it is with Sony Vegas.

yes sony vegas has very good resampling algorithms to convert frame rate.
otherwise, i have another way.
it involves changing the frame rate to 23.976 fps (which is film rate), slowing the audio down by 4% (which is 23.976/25, while keeping the same pitch), and then applying a 3:2 pulldown to the video.
You change the frame size to 352 x 240 (no cropping at all, and just make sure the aspect ratio of the output mpeg is 4:3).
this may provide you good results, and can be with the tools virtual dub and tmpgenc. Some people are only alive because it may be illegal to kill them -

i live in aust and we run pal format, but our dvd players are multi format, so they auto play both ntsc and pal thru our tv.
i sometimes convert these vcd mpeg vids to dvd mpeg and burn them to dvd and watch on tv, and no problems with being ntsc, ratio is still 4:3 anyway.
as for converting the vcd mpeg files to pal, i only wanted to do it for playing back on my pc with media player, and it looks wierd and more like wide screen, and i dont like it.
i got tmpgenc 3.0 and mainconcept and some of these vids came to me as low res avi files, and i convert them to 352x288 vcd mpeg files and burn them to vcd, or re-encode to dvd mpeg and burn to dvd with tmpge dvd author.
i think there is a way to convert the original avi source file from ntsc to pal with tmpge, but got to set it up right to do it. dunno.
im not going to bother getting any more software than i have, its not worth it cos all my videography work is in pal, and its just for the sake of the odd ntsc format vids that i get from usa.
what version of sony vegas r u referring to btw.
i got an old copy of procoder somewhere, ill have a look.
thx everyone....GLEN -

lol, i got procoder on my drive, but its not installed cos i dont use it.
i use DVIO to transfer vids to pc.
i use either TMPGE 3.0 to edit and encode my avi projects to dvd mpeg or i use mainconcept to encode my avi without editing, then use tmpge mpeg editor to edit the dvd mpegs before i use dvd-lab pro to author.
i dont use all those expensive all in one programs, for me its better to use seperate stand alone progs and i get great results,
thanks anyway....GLEN
