    Hi everyone,

    Pioneer recommends:
    Ver. 1.1, Ver. 1.1/2X and Ver. 1.2 4X DVD-RW media
    Ver. 2.0 and Ver. 2.0/4X/8X DVD-R media
to be used with its 520H DVD recorder.

How can you tell if it is a Version 1.1, Version 1.2 or Version 2.0 about the media used? I never see which version on the media I buy or on the box they come in. All I can see is if it is a 1X, 2X, 4x etc...

Recently, I damaged my beloved Sharp RSW2U DVD recorder (maybe beyond repair) by using 1X-2X DVD-RW media, as the 1X DVD-RW cannot be found anymore.

    Thanks,

I am not using a Pioneer. I am (was) using the Sharp DV-RW2U, which, I think was made by Pioneer as they are so similar regarding the setup, menus etc... The Sharp DV-RW2U was designed for version 1.1 1X DVD-R/RW media.

These 1X media are no longer available. I imported the deck from NY as Sharp Canada had no DVD recorders on the market less than a year ago.

Curiously the deck box had a Sharp Canada address. Maybe they wanted to get rid of these 1X decks as the 2X were already on the horizon. I think it was easier for them to sell them in the US.

The 1X-2X DVD-RW conflicted with a bug that was in the Pioneer decks (as Memorex explained).

Now that I am considering the Pioneer 520H, I am disappointed because it sold for $659.95 (CAN) in November '04, $699.95 in December and now in January '05 $799.95. How about that!

    Have a happy new year,

Have you contacted Sharp for a possible firmware upgrade/repair, even if it's out of warranty? If your Sharp recorder did use a Pioneer DVR-103/104 burner inside, then the firmware is defective. Your recorder is supposed to be compatible with DVD-RW Version 1.1, whether it's 1X or 2X. So it's the manufacturer's obligation to solve this issue. As you have observed, 1X DVD-RW is no longer available, and that shouldn't be your problem if you own an DVD-RW Version 1.1 compatible recorder.

To answer your question, if no speed or 1x, it is DVD-RW Ver 1.1, if 2X, it's Ver 1.1/2X, and if 4X, it's Ver 1.2.

As mentioned earlier, contact Sharp for an upgrade/repair. If they give you a run-around, ask to speak to their supervisor/manager. I've got a free repair for my DVD player which was almost 3 yrs out of warranty because of a defective component. Good luck.
