    Hi Baldrick,

I've noticed that regulars who are familiar with the commonly recommended tools are regularly referring to them by their generally accepted and understood acronyms. This is fine if you're also a regular...

But for those who aren't so initiated, it can be confusing or off-putting and usually prompts the question "What is XXX?".

Would it be possible to include commonly used acronyms in the relevant tools "automatic link" list?

    For example:

Include "TDA" in TMPGEnc DVD Author's list so that "TDA" becomes an automatic link to TMPGEnc DVD Author.

There's also "SSMM" for SlideShow Movie Maker.

And, "WMP" for Windows Media Player.

Might I also suggest that, if you decide to do the above, this thread either be a "sticky" or (probably better) be linked to from the "Tools" page so that others can list any common acronyms that don't attract automatic tool links.

You can then include them (or not) as you see fit.

I know it'd save me having to type "TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA)" all the time, and it'd also save those in the dark asking what the acronym stands for.

Does anyone else have any decent other commonly used acronyms to contribute?

    Cheers,
    Daamon.

I seem to recall this coming up a few times (possibly in OT I think?). Anyways, there's a number of threads with things such as WTF, STFU, RTFM ... oh wait ... sorry ... IIRC, AFAIK etc etc and any other "forum-speak" acronyms that are used. Maybe you could just harvest these and put them into a sticky or as a subsection of the glossary or something?

I guess the never-ending problem is getting people to read the glossary in the first place though
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Exactly.

Whereas the acronyms I'm referring are special in that they relate to tools and so can then automatically link to that tool, meaning that it doesn't matter if people don't read the glossary.

That's easy for you to say...

And that would be a solution, but it's an unfortunate fact that people are inherently lazy as well as (mostly) being busy and so acronuoyusy's are used.

    So, what d'ya say?

    ROTFLMAOWPIMP -

P.S. No offence meant by the "BS" and "BLX" - just couldn't think of any decent acronyms at the time.

I once went to the Reading Rock festival with a Swede (national, not vegetable - though I did wonder sometimes...) and he drove me mad all weekend. But, in his defence, he did recommend we go see "Soundtrack of Our Lives" - and I'm glad we did, they were excellent! Anyway, I digress...

Come on Baldrick... It's not that bad. And think of all the people it'll help - not having to explain what TDA is every time, and noobs not having to ask what SSMM is... Or even worse, being to ashamed to ask and then not learning... VideoHelp.com ...

Love 'em or hate 'em, my thinking is that they're regularly used and I often see the unitiated coming back with "What is...?".

Whereas, having "DVDWS is an advanced authoring application for consumers and low-level pros" has to be better...

    Hi Baldrick,

Many thanks... And for doing the additional ones too. Any chance of sorting the following four out too?

    vdub / vdubmod
    wmm (Windows Movie Maker)
    ssmm (SlideShow Movie Maker)

...they were listed above, but don't link.

If you want you can link me to the Glossary entry for 'tgpo'. Then maybe people will stop asking what it means.
