  1. I have 2 PC's over a Router to make up a LAN. 1 PC has the DVD player and the burner and the other the faster cpu which I use for TMPGEnc. Q. When I ripp the vobs to the 1st pc then try to use DVD2AVI and output the file over the LAN to the other PC the D2V file always ends up corrupted. Does not open in TMPGEnc. For anyone thinking why dont you just send the vob files to the other pc over the LAN. Have you ever tried it with a Router it has error checking, which slows the whole process down by a great deal. I was thinking would installing a switch/hub in the router and plugging my 2 PC's into this bypass the router or would the info go to the router anyhow. Router used for 1 Static IP connection to a cable ISP.

    Thanks in advance

First of all there a 2GB limitation on some network protocols and if your tcp/ip stack not implemented correctly it will not loop the sequence numbers back to zero when its reached.

There also this same limitation with samba i.e. MSlanmanger i.e. what windows uses to share files.

Also don't use netbeui as you'll always get corrupt files. Also a network drive connections udp so there no guarantee that the data the same form at the other end.

Also have you tried creating the avi on one system to see if you multimedia systems not corrupted and producing corrupted avi's. there's a registry reset fix for this if that's the case.

Why are you sending the files over a network have you heard of frame serving?

Also if you are using humble 10mbit/s network cards you might as well forget it as you going to take 6 hrs to do a DVD in file transfer alone. Use 100mbit cards.

Also use a reliable brand like 3com and don't use any of the RealTek or Samsung crap.

  3. The short answer is that frameservers do not work over network connections. I believe VirtualDub has a fairly good explanation as to why somewhere in the help files.

  4. PcJockey,
It sounds like you have the DVD2AVI program on the 1st PC. Have you tried to create the dv2 file and the assosiated sound file onto the 1st PC and then move/copy those files accross the LAN instaed of the VOBs, that way you only have to move approx. 1GB for the sound file and approx. 400K for the d2v file. If that doesn't work and I'm assuming that your LAN is working normally (ie you can copy data without corruption) you might try reinstalling DVD2AVI and /or TMPGEnc.

  5. Dunkem, that's not gonna work

the project file (.d2v) that dvd2avi creates points to the EXACT location of the .vob files...moving the .d2v to the other computer won't work as the .d2v file will cause tmpgenc to search for the .vob files in the 2nd computer

  6. Poopyhead, your right

<hanging head in embarrassment>My brain wasn't in gear when I sent off that message </hanging head in embarrassment>

PcJockey, I haven't tried this myself BUT maybe you could share the DVD player on the 1st PC and map a drive to it from the 2nd (faster) PC and create the VOB's directly onto the 2nd PC. Then run DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc on the 2nd PC, copy the resulting *.mpg to the 1st machine for burning ?
Sorry 'bout the bum steer in the first post...

  7. Hey all,

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. In the past, I have utilized Terminal Server Sessions to frameserve and encode movies on my network. It is really great since all the processing is done on another machine. Once the time-out is properly configured, you can exit the session without logging off. This way you can re-enter every hour or so to check-up. I have found it to be a most useful workaround to available space issues and if I forget to run a batch encode on TMPGEnc before leaving to work. Hope this helps!

  8. Guys,

Sorry but forgot to add that DVD2AVI does work on my Terminal Server as well. This has happened when I left one of my DVDs in my machine at home and forgot to create the project and wav files. Laters.
