just converted a 681meg avi film to mpeg2 using tmpgenc.when i go to tmpgencdvd author it tells me i cant use 23.976fps for dvd.if i re encode using 25fps for pal i get a unstable picture like a pause every second.using 23.976fps gives a perfectly smooth run.i tried various settings in tmpgenc, but if using 25fps i still get unstable preview.either way i cannot use tmpgencdvd author unless i re encode to 25fps. thanks for any advise

You have to include teh 3:2 pulldown setting when you encode to be able to use 23.976.

As Forum Troll said, do this:

    1. Set the Encode Mode to 3:2 pulldown when playback
    2. Set the Frame Rate to 23.976fps (internally 29.97 fps)

TMPGEnc DVD Author should now accept your file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

What is your audio sample rate ?

It should accept 44.1Khz (and it converts it to 48Khz) or 48Khz audio.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Hmmm, that seems weird to me. What was the exact wording on the sample error ? (post a screenshot too, maybe )
    If in doubt, Google it.

The ones in the screen dump I posted won't work - most of them are PAL settings - I just changed the two key ones as an example for you. Give me a minute ...

    EDIT:

    OK.

    Set it up like this:

    If in doubt, Google it.

i've never had this problem before.i cant understand why using 25fps causes video pauses.the only way i can get it to convert is if i use the settings given using encode dropdown,is to drop the reso to 720x480

    No problem

FWIW, while you're reading, learning and experimenting, you may find my AVI to DVD guide useful:
    http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm

    <note to self>
As soon as you open TMPGEnc, load your file, then load your template. DVD (PAL).mcf if you have a PAL source (25fps), or DVD (NTSC).mcf if you have an NTSC source (23.976fps or 29.976fpd). Then change just the settings you need to change, and leave everything else as-is. I'd also suggest that you read What is DVD (top left), and familiarize yourself with a few of the finer points of what you need to know if converting to DVD. This place is your video bible - read it at every opportunity
    If in doubt, Google it.

    One more thing:

This process is called encoding, and we're using TMPGEnc Plus. Authoring and TMPGEnc DVD Author is a whole different kettle of fish altogether. I was unable to help much for quite a few posts because I couldn't work out what error you were getting (since I assumed you were using TMPGEnc DVD Author and I had never heard of that error with that program before), and since you couldn't or wouldn't post a screen capture, I was unable to discover this earlier until it suddenyl dawned on me. Please keep in mind for future posts that we can't see your screen from here, and the more info you provide us with, the quicker you'll get the answer you need
    If in doubt, Google it.

    No worries

It might be an idea to take a look at https://www.videohelp.com/play.htm#identify . This outlines steps to help you determine the characteristics of your source files, and I would recommend that if your source is NTSC, encode as NTSC, and vice-versa for PAL.
    If in doubt, Google it.

OK. I've bolded the things you should take notice of ...

1090 Kbps - the video bitrate used - can help you determine the quality if used in conjunction with the frame size.
23.976 fps - the frame rate - if this is 25fps, you have PAL. If it's 23.976fps or 29.976fps you have NTSC.
576*304 (16:9) - the frame size and aspect ratio
XVID = XVID Mpeg-4 - the codec used to decompress it

141 Kbps - the audio bitrate used - if it's not a multiple of 32, then chances are it's VBR audio
48000 Hz - the frequency of the audio
2 channels - mono is 1 channel, stereo is 2 channels, surround sound is 6 channels
0x55 = MPEG Layer-3 - MP3 audio - a lot of times this is VBR audio, so check the audio bitrate

If you find out you have VBR MP3 audio, extract the audio to WAV using the guide here and then when you get into TMPGEnc, load your AVI as your video source, then manually load the WAV file as your audio source - TMPGEnc often struggles with VBR MP3 audio and causes all sorts of problems
    If in doubt, Google it.
