One big problem with this test is that some were using TMPGENC Plus with first pass cached selected under cpu settings.
Here is my new result with a 2.4Mhz P4 o/clocked to 3.05 Mhz.
The result with the same o/c system with plain TMgenc is 1 minute, 3 seconds.

The time to run the clip through TMPGEnc Plus 2.5x was 61 seconds. I only have a single HDD and it is a Seagate 200GB 7200RPM SATA HDD.
I should point out I didn't try to do anything "fancy" like kill any tasks running etc.
So again the total encode time was ---> 61 seconds

Offline brought up a good point. There are settings within TMPGEnc that can effect encoding time that are not controlled by the MCF file.
The 2-pass cache option (Option -> Environmental Settings -> CPU -> Save analyzing result of multipass VBR to cache) has quite a significant effect. A difference of 53 vs. 84 seconds on my 2.8 GHz, non-HT, P4 with 1 GB DRAM.
This is further exacerbated by the fact that the files are so small (3MB input, 6MB output) that the cache file will be fully cached in DRAM on most systems.
The "Preview" options (Option -> Preview Option) can make a difference too. The computer I ran these tests on has an old 2x AGP card (Matrox Millennium G450). The difference between the three settings was(full 720x480 preview, display at 24 bits):
Show all frames: 58 seconds
Display with thinning: 53 seconds
Do not display: 53 seconds
The differences are smaller with more modern cards. The size of the preview can make a difference too (no benchmarks today but I've seen this in the past).
Some of the testers accidentally ran the benchmark in CBR mode. Some may also have used different Motion Search Precision settings. So just for fun I ran the test in single pass, constant quality mode (about the same speed as single pass CBR) with different motion search precision settings as a reference. All the following tests were run with preview disabled. CQ was set at 75 percent (max 8000 kbps, min 2000 kbps) and delivered a file of similar size and quality as the benchmark. All other settings were as specified in the MCF file.
2-pass VBR, highest MSP, not cached: 84 sec, 6102 KB
2-pass VBR, highest MSP, cached: 53 sec, 6102 KB
1-pass CQ75, highest MSP: 42 sec, 6305 KB
1-pass CQ75, high MSP: 21 sec, 6308 KB
1-pass CQ75, normal MSP: 13 sec, 6323 KB
1-pass CQ75, fast MSP: 9 sec, 6350 KB
1-pass CQ75, fastest MSP: 8 sec, 6642 KB
As you can see, 1-pass is twice as fast as 2-pass (uncached) as expected.
There is more than a 4x difference in encoding time between "fast" and "highest" motion search precisions -- but less than 1 percent difference if file size! That is, the highest motion search precision increased the compressability of the file by less than one precent over the second lowest.
With longer, real world videos, I usually see about a 2 percent difference between those two settings. But I have seen as much as 7 percent in a few tests. In any case, using the highest motion search precision setting rarely gains much over fast or normal. -
There certainly are other settings but most don't know where to put them so the results aren't really here nor there. I'm still looking into putting together an entirely different benchmark test that can be more scripted, the only problem is using a good free encoder that supports SMP that everyone can run. And don't recommend DivX or XviD, this isn't to see who can create rubbish faster.

That was BJ_Ms doing, he supplied the source and I was too lazy to find something else.
I didn't say DivX/XviD look bad, I said they were rubbish. Almost all of the DVD players that are in almost every household with a TV can't play those formats and so MPEG2 is king for now.
Besides, I associate MPEG4 with pirated movies, television shows, porn, etc. The only nice thing about it is that it compresses well, but if your argument for it is that it makes your DVD backups on your PC take up less space well then leaving them on the DVD takes up even less space on your computerFB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming -

Last time I ran this test I only did it with my machine overclocked. This time I repeated the test and I added non-overclocked results. I also increased the memory in my machine from 512 MB to 2GB but it did not help much. I also went from DDR to DDR2.

Hard disks unfragmented. Transfer speed according SiSoft Sandra 2005.10.10.69:
Drive C: Seagate 120GB 7.2K rpm => 38 MB/s
Drive D: Hitachi 160GB 7.2K rpm => 41 MB/s
Once again I tested encoding from drive C: and to D: and from Drive C: to C: and the encoding time was the same. Unfragmenting the disk did improve a lot the trasfer rate.
Processes were not disabled. I just boot the system and ran the test. Power settings were set to normal for CPU and RAM during normal and overclocked tests. -
sorry i know this is an old thread but i just built another cheep computer.. mobo mem and box cpu for 200 deleivered. its not the top of the line but its a lot faster than my other computer. i didnt take a cpuz of my stock numbers but its a amd 64 3200 clock 2.0 gig 512 crucial pc3200 cl2 biostar nforce 4 mb using 250g sata 3.0 hd. below are my OCed numbers i can get it a bit higher and keep it stable.. but im not done tweekin and want to get a better HSF etc.. 600mhz and a savings of about 14 seconds with the oc.

I see that there are currently no Intel Core 2 Duo systems benchmarked. I'll do mine as soon as I build it up - just waiting for components to arrive.

1) Core 2 Duo E6300, 1 GB DDR 3200, TMPGEnc -> Option -> Environmental Setting -> CPU -> Saves analyzing result of multipass VBR to cache -> enabled: 26 seconds.
2) Same as #1 with that last option disabled, 44 seconds.
3) Same as #2 but using a single core (via Task Manager's processor affinity setting): 81 seconds.
Note this is an unusual motherboard for a C2D. It has an AGP slot, two memory slots for DDR, and 2 memory slots for DDR2. I got it for free with the processor so I was able to use all the other parts from an old Northwood P4 system. Todays' Fry's ad shows this processor and motherboard combo for $170. That's less than the price of the chip alone ($180) a NewEgg today. -
26 seconds is a very, very quick time indeed. 8)
I'll be benchmarking on the Asus P5W64 WS Professional using the E6400 and 2GB of DDR2 PC6400 (800MHz) RAM. -
1) Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 1 GB DDR 3200, TMPGEnc -> Option -> Environmental Setting -> CPU -> Saves analyzing result of multipass VBR to cache -> enabled: 22 seconds.
2) Same as #1 with that last option disabled, 35 seconds.
3) Same as #2 but using a single core (via Task Manager's processor affinity setting): 68 seconds.
