After being a very faithful Taiyo Yuden person, I've noticed that the latest spindle I get from rima.com doesn't seem to be very durable. While I don't doubt the quality of the discs, I've noticed the silver reflective layer can flake fairly easily. Sooo...what's a good disc to purchase? I've been looking into the Mitsui gold CD-R's, I've got no problem with the price ($1.25/ea or so) as long as it's worth it. Help!

i wouldnt worry about the flakey surface your talking about, unless they are giving you coasters that's another story.
I would stick with TY. -
That's the thing, they're giving me coasters. I dropped one once from a height of no more than 3 feet onto one of those plastic mats used in office spaces so the chair doesn't mess up the carpet. Coastered in a 1/4 of a second. Well not entirely true as it only messed up the last 30% of the disc or so and I only burned about 300 megs on it. But still I figured it would be a little more durable than that. Also a recent audio cd I did is having lots of skipping problems and it looks like there are bubbles/reflectivity issues in parts of the disc near the beginning. Are these exceptions to the norm or what?

Mitsui gold CD-R are probably the best of the best, easily as good as TY and probably better due to the gold layer and phthalocyanine dye which is supposedly more stable under extreme conditions (heat, sunlight, etc.)
Mitsui (now known as MAM - stands for Mitsui Advanced Media) claims their gold discs have "100% efficiency even after 200 days sun exposure". TY's probably wouldn't survive that test, but what idiot would leave a valuable disc out in the sun for 200 days?
