Playing and encoding Avi files

I cant seem to do it. They just about play, but are slow and jerky. But as far as encoding, I cant even get them into any program with some error coming up. It is NOT the files themselves. All of my Avi files wont work. Can anyone sujest a codec maybe? I dont even know if its that. Its anoying because I wanna get them onto a DVD but they of course wont load into the Authoring program.

You can try FFDSHOW , since it opens lots of different file types...

G-spot did the trick. I could kiss you. I cant play em properly, but by god I can encode em to MPG and then they are my oster. WOO-HOO. Thank you so much.
