I convert some home DV to mpeg2 and burned them on DVD. I found that all the movement on TV were smeared while they looked fine on my computer. I realized that the problem could be from the field order (my DV footage is probably upper field first, anyone know any software that can definitely tell this?) and scan mode (my DV footage is most likely interlaced since I am using a low end sony camcorder). So I adjust the setting in the encoder (I am using CCE) to the opposite setting for field order and scan mode (uncheck upper field frist and select zigzag and progressive scan, vs check upper field first and select alternative), and leave other settings the same. I made a DVD using the two resulting mpv files (a short footage of about 4 min) and they are comparable on TV with little movement smearing. Can anybody tell me why these happening.? Thanks,

"Caps" from my ADVC-100 are into DV and are always BFF FWIWIf in doubt, Google it. -
According to this guide (Q10),:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53770
I did the test and found out that if I assume bbf, the video is not actually right.
The problem is the video quality is similar no matter what I choose (uff or bff). Any suggestions? -
Following the instruction in the first link by jimmalenko, I found that my DV footage is bff. I should, as jimmalenko suggested, do all 4 combinations and see the results. I suspect that the combination of progressive scan may somehow compensate for the wrong field order (tff) so that it looks fine on TV. Any thought? Anyway, I will try all 4 combinations and let you know the results. Thanks,

I don't use CCE but i'm told that the settings for field order are a little confusing, and sometimes have the opposite effect from what you'd expect.

I do tried all four combination.
Check uff, alternative/progressive gave me the same clear video,
Uncheck uff, alternative/progressive gave me the same smearing (jerky) video.
So field order option is crutial.
As to the alternative/progressive, I think we can choose either one. Since when I use Videowave to convert the same avi file to mpeg2 (you can't make any parameter adjustment). The resulting mpeg2 file is progressive (and uff).
