    someone may find this usefull
i was sick of dropping frame and hard drive limits so i got away from my computer. Now i use tivo to record everything. You can use tivo series 1 as a capute device, there are many ways you can turn your tivo into captue device, there are many sitees explaining how to's. and it works great. you can aslo use tivo as surveillance system to record from cameras. do not buy series 2 tivos because without subscription it won't do anything, but on the other hand seres one can do manuel records without the subscripton. you can fine refurbished tivos here for $69, can beat that deal.

Been using my ReplayTV as a capture device for about a year now. With the networking capability of the ReplayTV, I just record what ever I want on it and then download it to my PC with freeware, no extras needed, no modifications.

Has worked out great and I have made many DVDs of the captured video.

I guess the newer TiVo's are finally getting the idea of allowing downloads.

for replaytv you have to be a subscriber to do anykind or recording but with tivo series 1 you can do recording without subscription.
